Acer has upgraded their both of Predator Helios 300 and 17 with 8th generation CPU and now promising more performance than its last generation. Previously, I have checked the 300 one and looks promising in my opinion as the manufacture puts so many good changes. The design is brand new, smoother display, and featuring an overall better quality. Today, we are going to take a look into its more powerful version, the Helios 500. The system is the successor of its predecessor and featuring much better specification. It uses the same Coffee Lake generation CPU, but the GPU now using of GTX 1070 rather than 1060. Of course with this new GPU, the performance in gaming is something you should consider here.
The laptop now becomes a good competitor for ASUS ROG Strix GL504 as both of them having similar specification and pricing. They have price started for under 2000 dollars and likely being an overall great option for gamers. Furthermore, we are going to check how good it looks and how it performs for satisfying our needs in term of gaming. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Design and Connectivity
In term of design, the Helios 500 really reminds me of what Predator 17 looks like with few changes made to make it feels more modern. You can clearly see the protruding rear is completely missing as the new cooling system does not really need this thing. The overall look would be very similar to its older brother, the 300. People who love its design, then would also love this one. The build quality is impressive right here although the plastic case is some kind of cheap for good reason. Thankfully, the black finishing makes it more premium and feels fantastic to carry around.
I have tried to test its durability by pressing the center is and twisting its lid cover and the result is great. Making and twisting it should be really hard and needs great amount of power to do it. There is no gap, creak, and overall we are getting of what we deserve for its price. As for the connectivity, Acer adds of dual Thunderbolt 3 port which accompanied by few standard USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, mini display port, audio jack, and Kensington lock. The SD card reader is missing, but I think people do not really need this feature in this device.back to menu ↑
Display and Input
The display quality here looks similar to ASUS promises in their ROG GL504 series in term of color accuracy. Interestingly, Acer adds brighter display here with 300 nits brightness distribution. The color production itself is fairly similar as it covers of 91 % SRGB color. For testing for almost two weeks, for me the display is bright and crisp enough for doing multiple purposes works included of gaming. The 144 Hz refresh rate should improve your overall experience and skill especially in FPS games that need of fast and reliable response. If you move from a laptop with 60 Hz panel, then you can see the big difference here.
Moving into its input, the manufacture decides to make some tweaks especially in keyboard layout. For some reasons, they make the navigation slightly to the bottom. I still find it as comfortable to reach, but users might have different opinion about it. Here, there are total of six extra dedicated buttons for adding shortcut through your macro and other functional things. The backlit support is featured and having few different customization through their proprietary application. Both of display and input show impressive performance and will satisfy everyone needs for an enjoyable multimedia consumption.

Performance and Gaming
The performance is something that it should proud here. The Intel I7 8750H is a truly good processor with each CPU clocked at 2.2 GHz. It fully supports of hyper threading works and handling multi-tasking works pretty well. The I7 7700HQ we see last year only features of Quad core CPU, but now Intel adds two additional cores which considered as so helpful for users who related in works like graphical and photo management. Right here, more cores means less time to wait considering everything is so dependable in CPU. For CPU, RAM, and storage management I have no problem at all here.
The similar impression is seen in gaming as GTX 1070 handles every single game in good performance and high setting. The GTA 5 for example is getting 39 FPS in maximum setting. The game looks crisp and detail at this setting especially during multiplayer mode. The less demanding games like CS Go and Rocket League are going to show even better performance at this case. 100 FPS is reachable almost at the time during my gameplay. If you enjoy or want to play games in maximum setting, then this must be a good option for you.back to menu ↑
The Helios 500 is a promising well rounded system which promises so many good things. When it comes for gaming, the experience is truly great here especially with 1070 graphic card inside and high refresh rate display. Unfortunately, the weird keyboard layout placement could be a bad thing here and the poor battery life really forces me to always plug it to charger. If you manage to overcome these problems, then you have nothing to worry here. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it. I just hope the information is good enough for providing you a good option. Mind leaves some comments for further assistance regarding the article.
