Dell Latitude 5491 is just announced and it’s finally coming with Coffee Lake H generation processor inside. Different like its predecessor, what we see inside is Intel standard 45 watts processor instead of ULV one with 15 watts TDP. As the result, the performance is significantly improved and specifically designed for professional usage. With more power, there is so many new things are available to do included taking care of intense graphical application. If you look for a replacement for your desktop, then this could be good option at this time. The laptop started to sell for around 1400 dollars for the lower end model and getting slightly more expensive for its high end variant.
For this review, I got the unit equipped with I5 8400H processor. Interestingly, it comes with higher version from I5 8300H processor and featuring higher clock speed. The rest of specification is considered as standard and you should see of SSD storage and 8GB memory as the standard configuration. Today, we are going to take a look into it further and see how it goes for satisfying our needs. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Design and Connectivity
The design should be so familiar here and some users get bored with it. For once again, they built the chassis with rough plastic and then covered in matte black finishing. They never dramatically improved the design although the weight is reduced here. Unfortunately, I still find the weight as heavy especially when comparing it with Zenbook or Thinkpad series. The build quality is impressive as there is no flex or warping at all. The manufacture really puts high quality material and as the result the weight is heavier than I thought. It has total weight for 1.7 kg and considered as heavier than many other 14 inch system. I still manage to carry it over my backpack without any problem, but takes time to get used here.
In term of connectivity, I am so happy to see of legacy ports like VGA port here. Yeah, this is kind of old port, but I believe that many users still need it at all. Impressively, they also add of Thunderbolt 3 for more modern connection and standard USB 3.0 if you do not want to use of external adapter. The ports then accompanied by standard connection like HDMI, mini display, audio jack, a Noble lock slot, and the power adapter for charging the battery.back to menu ↑
Display and Input
One thing worth mentioning here is the display quality. For some reasons, they decide to add similar panel like its predecessor and it looks so standard in my opinion. If you expect for a bright and crisp display, then you would be disappointed as the display only covers of 60 % SRGB color and having only 250 nits brightness. I see they put of high price point here and I really expect they give us a better quality of display. There is no way they are able to compete with Thinkpad at this case with this kind of standard quality. Its matter of taste, but I never really recommend you to use it as media entertainment.
As for the input, the Chiclet style keyboard is featured and although some keys are made small here the keys are well spaced here. The base is considering as sturdy and wont bend easily as soon as you type on it. This is not the best keyboard I have seen so far, but at least still pretty much usable for long usage typing. The optional backlit support is very useful when you need to edit your document during low light condition. Just never expect something wonderful here.

Performance and Battery
This is the first time I am seeing of Intel I5 8400H processor inside as the most common one so far we have now is I5 8300H which considered as the standard version of it. Here, the processor speed clocked at 2.5 to 4.2 GHz instead of 2.3 to 4.0 GHz on its base model. For this case, you are able to expect of 20 to 25 % more performance due its higher clock rate. In term of performance, this is a quad core CPU with hyper threading support and will care your job better than any laptop with ULV processor you find right now. The power consumption is higher than standard, but the performance gained is worth a shot here.
The battery takes a great shot here due its high power consumption. Thankfully, they add of 68 Wh big battery and still manage to last for 8 to 9 hours. Those amounts of time are standard, but should be long enough for finishing everything in a single day. I guess the low brightness screen makes a good impact here and reducing the brightness level will even offer you a better battery life support. Just make sure to fully charge it and you have no time at all to worry.back to menu ↑
The Latitude 5491 is finally raised into the market and showing of what we can expect from a premium device. The laptop is however never considered as perfect as the display panel quality is worse than I thought. The rest of stuff like keyboard and audio are great although it feels like a standard result in my opinion.
