The 17 inch laptop is something kind rarely seen in the market because most of them are coming to gaming section and not meant for business and home usage at all. Interestingly, Acer has just announced the 17 inch version of Acer Aspire 5. It looks like the manufacture wants to target of users who want to have a fully capable machine for delivering an enjoyable experience for their entertainment purposes like streaming movies or playing games for a little bit. The device started to sell for under 500 dollars for the base model and reaching up to 1000 dollars for the higher end version. The system is worth to take look if you prefer the performance over everything.
In bad side, the design takes a great hit due its hardware. Yeah, Acer does not put a really good design and I never really recommend taking it for outdoor usage because its overall look might bother you here. We have seen similar option like Ideapad 320s and it comes with thinner and sleeker design at the same price here. It’s better for us to take a look further inside and see how it goes for its budget price. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Design and Connectivity
The design never meant to the selling point here, but I really kind like of its weight here. For me, 6.6 pounds is light enough especially when comparing it with Razer Blade Pro or similar gaming device. I think the 150MX graphic card just does not add too much weight here and I guess this is the reason why the weight is slightly lighter. In term of build quality, they put of plastic case with black finishing in all around its outer and inner area. There is nothing surprise me about its build as it feels strong, but the lid cover is twisted easily as soon as you twisting it. The base or keyboard area is fine although I expect more durability here.
Acer adds of single drop down hinge system here and allowing you to flip it over 180 degree. I do not really know this feature is useful or not, but worth mentioning here. The rest of stuff from the design is similar like its 15 inch version and if you are familiar with Aspire laptop, then you should feel like right at home here. As for the connectivity, no Thunderbolt 3 port available but there is a single USB type-C port placed at left side of it. The DVD drive is still available and feels usable when you want to play some movies from your BD collection.back to menu ↑
Display and Input
The 1920 x 1080p display is relatively standard in term of quality here. It covers good amount SRGB color although the brightness is dim in my opinion. I guess it’s around 270 nits and should be okay for indoor usage, but being an issue for outdoor usage. I just hope the similar impression found its webcam. The images taken look plain and the color is washed. Thankfully, my roommate still manages to see my face clearly here. The bezel surrounded the display is thick and adding thinner bezel will make it feels more modern and appealing to wider users.
As for the input, we are offered with a full size keyboard with backlit support. For some reasons, the keyboard has some kind of small arrow and navigation buttons as you could see some keys appeared to be really small here. It takes time to get used as I often accidentally press the wrong button during my typing. The typing experience is great, but feels much better if the traditional layout is being used here. The better impression found here on touchpad. Its big size allowing you to copy and move text without any issue.

Performance and Battery
The Intel 8th generation CPU and MX graphic card are good combination in my opinion as both of them are capable of producing good amount of power, but still delivering of relatively low power consumption. The performance and battery are balance here although playing games are limited to some older games and newer games with low setting here. The I7 8550U is good enough for even rendering YouTube video thanks to its quad core CPU. The 150 MX is not a gaming GPU, but playing Fortnite in low setting is okay here. It runs great during multiplayer mode and should let you play game during your break.
Acer promises battery up to 7 hours here and yeah the battery life is always surrounded around 5 to 7 hours in full usage. Playing games will only give you 4 hours in total, but editing document and browsing should give 6 to 7 hours in single charge. Charging the battery from 0 to 100 takes around 2 hours and feels fast enough as it has big battery capacity. I have to say the performance of hardware and battery is impressive as long as you do not really crazy about it.back to menu ↑
The Aspire 5 17 inch is not so impressive in term of design and overall look, but the rest of things like performance and display are great in my opinion here. The laptop is very comparable with Lenovo 320S in all everything and each of them offer different kind of things to expect. At one side, Acer promises more powerful discrete graphic card and at the same time Lenovo promises of sleeker and thinner design. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it. Mind leaving any comment for further assistance regarding the article and see you again next time.
