Acer Predator Helios 500 (8950HK, GTX 1070) Gaming Laptop Review

I have just reviewed the Acer Predator Helios 500 for couple of months and at that I time I was so impressed on how Acer improves almost everything it has with new hardware and overall new design approach. Difference than its competitors where they just put the new hardware without doing or improving anything, Acer step forward to do everything they can in order to get as much as consumers they want. I guess this is what every manufacture should do every year and not just putting something in the already same chassis. Today, we are going to take a look into it further once again, but we are seeing the higher version of it now.

The version of Predator is finally equipped with Core I9 8th generation processor. While, the GPU performance is remaining similar, user can expect of more performance in CPU side. With the price difference for only couple hundred dollars, this seems considered as best option if you look for something more powerful and demanding. Let’s see how it works for satisfying our needs by seeing how it runs couple of tests. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.

Case and Looks

The new Helios basically features the same exact chassis like its low end model. The new design looks impressive with the new WASD keys and cursor highlight cursor. Although it does not look so difference than its predecessor, you should see that the manufacture improves couple of things especially in hinge system and material side. The single drop hinge system is now featured and now feels much flexible, but still sturdier than ever. The entire chassis is created from plastic and overall promise of good balance between and portability and durability. The durability is considered as better than most of similar laptops at this price.

With the same chassis like its cheaper model, I just hope the temperature won’t be issue considering that the I9 processor produces more power, but as the result it takes more and should give more heat to inside. The temperature management is okay there and I really hope the same case happened here. I am not going to talk much further about its design and connectivity and you can probably check the most things on its previously review that you are able to check here. I recommend you to really check it further if you think design as something important here.

Acer Predator Helios 500 8950HK 2 The 17 inch display comes with 1920 x 1080p resolution. Acer provides two different configurations included the 1080p and 4K resolution one. I personally love the 1080p one and should more recommend if you decide to use the laptop for gaming since it has faster refresh rate display. The 144 Hz refresh rate is promised while the 4K model only has 60 Hz refresh and really meant for professional multimedia usages like photo and video editing. Just make sure to check the specification before you are ready to take one of it considering there are few different configurations you should note here.

The next thing I want to talk about here is the maintenance support. There is no maintenance hatch, but getting inside is done pretty easily by removing some screws. Interestingly, the battery is also easily removable as Acer did not screw it into the chassis. You can just unplug the cable and swap it with the new one. In term of upgradability option, there are two RAM slots available, a single 2.5 inch HDD drive, and another M.2 SSD slot. The manufacture provides plenty of options for making upgrade and users are freely to buy any configuration they want and making an upgrade for later.

Hardware Performance

The CPU performance is the most interesting we should take a look here. The I9 8950HK features of 2.9 default clock and coming with 6 cores X86 architecture processor. The 45 watts standard watt is included, but I can exactly measure how the CPU handles the power consumption considering its fluctuated to much higher and lower case depending on how much power it needs. Testing it with Cinebench, I got the score for 1130 points and considered as 20 % more powerful than what I see in MSI GT75 17 2018 due its better thermal management support. Handling light and even heaviest stuff are done exactly like I want and I have tried to render my 4K video for couple of times and its rendered pretty fast than its Core I5 model.

As the companion for its CPU, they once again put the GTX 1070. The 1070 is easily considered as the second most powerful mobile GPU NVIDIA has right now and means the performance is not something you should worry here. It will handle every single game with any setting you want. I am playing Final Fantasy 15 with high setting right now and run better than I expect. The game looks great in graphic and even better considering there is no performance drop or lags during my gameplay. The 1070 is an impressively powerful graphic card, but you might want to see the 1080 model if you demand for more power.

Final Thought

The Predator Helios 500 2018 model is impressively powerful 17 inch gaming laptop. With core I9 processor and 1070 graphic inside, users could just doing anything without need afraid for performance issue. Everything runs like it’s supposed to be and would be good companion for gamers or users demand it for professional usage. Another worth thing considering here is the price. For just under 2500 dollars, I think the 500 is one of the cheapest option users can afford right now. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it.
