MSI is having a good position in gaming market, but that does not mean it will stop them to expand their market for reaching into much wider consumers. Recently, they just announced of MSI PS42 14 inch which is not a gaming laptop at all. It’s a thin and portable system that specifically made for business purposes. This market is already flooded by so many good similar competitors like Dell XPS 13, Zenbook 13, and HP Spectre 13 2018. MSI still insists try to jump into this market by providing something difference and having a big name in their hands.
Unfortunately, beside than its incredibly thin and light chassis, I am not finding something difference or surprising thing here. The specification itself is pretty standard where they put of Intel I7 ULV processor from 8th generation and combined with MX graphic card. The same case found to its pricing as I think an under 1300 dollars is very common here. Still, we need to see the quality of display, keyboard, and many things before we take any judgement for it. Today, we are going to take a look into it further and see how it works for us. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Design and Connectivity
If you are familiar with their gaming design, then you should find the PS42 has a pretty similar design to MSI GS65 in any direction you look at it. The hinge system, every rounded, and even the smooth surface finishing looks similar here. To make it looks different, they decide to add of silver brushed aluminum finishing instead of black and I really love this decision as it hides the fingerprint mark much better comparing to its black color. The silver color also looks better to use for business purposes and feels more premium. I really hope they should improve the chassis rigidity that we will talk next.
In term of durability, I am quite disappointed to see the chassis has lack of rigidity. I find the XPS 13 and Matebook Pro have more rigid chassis for some reasons. The edges are twisted easily and the surface even shows worst impression since it does not feel thick and sturdy at all. Thankfully, the hinge system offers a better impression especially with its capability for allowing the users to flip the screen up to 180 degree. The hinge is flexible and durable enough to use for any usage and so far I have no problem here. As for the connectivity, there are two USB type-C available here, but I really expect to see of Thunderbolt 3 port especially considering how expensive the price is. The rest of connectivity like HDMI, 3.5 mm audio jack, and micro SD reader are also available to depend on.back to menu ↑
Display and Input
The bezel-less display is featured and probably considered as the biggest selling for it. The bezel surrounded the screen is almost nowhere to found here. The panel even looks more impressive as it manages to cover of 98 % SRGB color and getting of 269 nits of brightness. The color accuracy is nearly 100 % and means could be nice companion for video or photo editing. Unfortunately, the brightness is something I afraid here. During some cases, the panel is hardly seen during the days although the matte panel reduces its reflection little bit, but seeing a brighter panel is more recommended here.
As for the input, for some reasons they decide not to include the Steel Series keyboard although many users find this keyboard as very impressive. They can adjust the keyboard for business purposes, but the manufacture puts a completely different keyboard here. As the result, the keys have short travel distant and it’s resistant softer than I expect especially in Enter and Space keys. The backlit is featured and having four different adjustment depending of your needs.

Performance and Battery
Similarly like other thin and light premium laptop, MSI equips the system with Intel Kaby Lake R I7 8550U processor. It’s just almost impossible to put of standard 45 watts battery as the power consumption is high and the temperature should be crazy. Well, Apple is crazy enough to put of Core I9 processor in Macbook Pro 15 2018 and its getting so many backslash from users due its incredibly hot temperature. For any light and medium usages like document editing and rarely editing photo, the ULV processor is more than enough to take all of your needs especially now the 8th gen line up now features of quad core CPU.
The 150 MX graphic card itself offers of a balance between battery life and performance. The 150MX is basically the same GPU as the GT 1030 that you see in desktop. Playing games are still possible as long as the games have no decent system requirement for example like Overwatch and Fortnite. I can still run both of these games in low and medium setting into 1080p resolution. The 8 to 9 hours battery is impressive thanks to its 50 Wh battery inside. Carrying the charger is necessary anymore as users can just charge it after they get home.back to menu ↑
The display and its portable design are biggest consideration you could note from MSI PS42. The rest of things like specification, keyboard, and audio are not so impressive to see and many its competitors provide even more quality inside. MSI has to improve many things here if they really want to consistently release of new system every years. I am hoping they will provide us a more recommended device to recommend for users.
