MSI GS65 051 is a completely beautiful laptop with such an incredible thin and light design while carrying of a powerful hardware inside. Few months back, I have reviewed this system which equipped with Coffee Lake processor and GTX 1070 graphic card. For such a price, I am so satisfied with the specification they put here. Still, I think that not all of everyone wants to spend that much for getting a laptop and for this case I want to see the much cheaper model for it. Recently, I got the chance for seeing the 1060 model which costs for under 2000 dollars.
The overall design looks similar and they even add the same 8th generation CPU. One make difference is only located on storage, memory, and the graphic card. They need to drop the capacity here into much lower one, but still considered as powerful enough for gaming or multimedia purposes. Well, let’s take a look inside and see how it works for us. That is what we are going to talk about on this article. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Case and Looks
I am not disappointed at all in term of design here, but I am going to say some of my impression about its quality which I think as quite bad here. First of all, you might find the design looks very interesting because MSI puts such a nice finishing surface here. The entire chassis is covered in black finishing and feels pretty premium in our hands. The same chase found on its material, but unfortunately the chassis is lack in rigidness and warped very easily during some cases. Comparing to Gigabyte Aero 15x 2018, I find the chassis is far behind in term of quality. The lid cover is too flexible and the area surrounded the keyboard is just okay.
I am so sure with the current price range, MSI is able to do better things here. One thing you should really appreciate here is on how thin and portable the design is. It carries of powerful hardware inside and still the chassis is only weight for just 1.8 kg with 1.8 cm tall. The weight and dimension are easily making it as the thinnest and lightest gaming machine available right now alongside with Razer Blade 15 2018. The portability is something users can expect as long as they have no mind with less quality in the durability.back to menu ↑
Connectivity and Maintenance Support
The connectivity is always being an important case for a laptop and at this case the GS65 features almost everything you need with some important of them are missing. The standard USB and Thunderbolt ports here are featured, but I really miss the micro SD card reader and Ethernet port here. I should say the Aero 15 is still better in term of I/O connectivity. Having no SD reader is very annoying especially when you often take of the SD card from your camera. You are forced to use of external adapter in order to connect of this device. The rest of connectivity like HDMI and audio jack are available, but make sure to check everything you need here.
MSI offers of impressive upgradebility option, but you must open the entirely back cover since the maintenance hatch is not provided. While opening the back cover is done easily, you have to be careful here for not breaking its cable because you should see many of them inside. As soon as you get inside, you would get an access to memory and the internal storage. It’s quite crowded and just makes sure to open and swap the component very carefully.

Gaming and Battery
The performance in the processor unit should not be questioned anymore considering the Intel I7 8750H is considered as pretty powerful mobile processor. There are 6 cores CPU and featuring of hyper threading support that can handle of many applications at the same time. What I really want to talk about here is the gaming performance. The 1060 is less powerful than the 1070 card and because of this case you have to adjust some of setting in your current games. Here, not all of games are playable in high setting and for the example is the new Battlefield 5 beta. In high setting, I notice the framerate is unstable and capped under 60 FPS in many cases. In medium setting, the games run better here.
Since this is a gaming laptop, never expect the battery life would be really good. In real life result, the battery for most all of time runs for 3 to 4 hours in gaming usage while for streaming and getting of 5 to 6 hours in web browsing and streaming video. The 6 hours usage is quite amazing since not all of high performance laptops have this current level. Still, the result won’t beat the battery life in a system with ULV processor since the power consumption is slightly high here.back to menu ↑
The MSI GS65 Stealth is currently marketed not only as a gaming system, but also fully designed as high performance system for doing some heavy task works like video rendering. Such this application will need a more powerful CPU and GPU that cannot be handled by integrated card and ULV processor. MSI might lead the competition if only Gigabyte does not provide the same system here. The Aero 15X for me is better in almost everything. The design, durability, performance, and even the battery life are better there. The thing gets worse considering both of them promise the same price point here. Its back on you for deciding, so feel free to take any consideration about it.
