Dell Inspiron 14 5482 (8265U, 8GB) 2 in 1 Laptop Review

Dell Inspiron 14 5482 is a decent of creation and professional tool to afford in 2018 if you look for something more affordable, portable, and powerful. The Inspiron series has well known for making a good product, but in much affordable price than its competitors. Dell usually divides the device for three kinds of screen sizes included the 13, 15, and the 17 one. Interesting this year they include the 14 inch model and seems to be better option considering we still have its portability, but having a much bigger display as return. This system does not undergo many differences in term of design, but I am pretty sure everyone expect of performance improvement and not the design here.

In low budget market, the most important thing people consider here is the performance. For this reason, I am happy to say they include of decent hardware inside. You have of Intel I5 processor from Whiskey Lake generation here. The processor is much faster than the 8th generation one we commonly see nowadays. Just for this reason, I am pretty sure it will make you be interested to take a look into it. Let’s spend of our little time for checking how good it is for satisfying of our needs. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.

Case and Looks

Some of you might expect a completely redesign of look from it, but they most everything looks similar and simple here. The Inspiron always feature the same design for every year and they basically do the same thing this year. However, the material quality is slightly improved here and they finally put of aluminum material instead of plastic. The entire chassis is built from aluminum for except the back cover. As the result, the build quality looks better and feels more premium in our hands. The same case found on its display as it now features of an extra glass protection on the top of its panel. It resists to our twist much better and won’t bend so easily in minimal pressure.

As for a convertible device, having a lighter weight and small dimension are important matter and I cannot say this system as pretty portable considering the weight is heavy and the dimension is slightly bigger. The chassis overall has 20 mm thickness and considered as chunky and bulky. In term of weight, we sure have of 1.75 kg of total of weight and sometimes reduces the portability when you carrying so much in your hands. But, I won’t make a complaint considering its price point and its big screen size.

Display and Input

Dell Inspiron 14 5482 2 I am quite surprised to see of full HD screen rather than HD one considering some of its competitors like Lenovo only offer of HD resolution display on its Lenovo Flex 5 14 inch. Still, I have to say the display quality is relatively mediocre in my opinion. The panel suffers of both low brightness level and color accuracy. It only can produce for 218 nits of brightness support and having 60 % SRGB color. It looks great for working and movies streaming, but more professional work for photo editing won’t offer you any impression here. The Zenbook Flip UX461 should be a better option for this matter.

As for the input method, they offer a fully backlit keyboard with Chiclet style layout. In good way for its silver design, they make all of keys for the keyboard in black one. Here, I am not so impressed in keyboard because the keys are not tactile enough and somehow feel weak. The tactile and responsiveness are just hardly to see here. You should get used for a while, but not everyone will love it easily. Some of its models have of fingerprint scanner nearly the keyboard and is useful for login into the system without need for a password.

Performance and Battery

This is the first time I am seeing of Whiskey Lake CPU in Inspiron series and it runs pretty great. Intel does not boosts the CPU clock this time, but the turbo speed clock is slightly improved from 3.4 GHz to 3.9 GHz. Users could expect of like 15 % performance improvement compared to the I5 from the Kaby Lake R generation. However, everything is depending on the thermal management considering its base clock is similar. The performance boosted is depended on the turbo speed and not the base one. In bad way, the power consumption is increased from the 15 watts to 25 watts. Let’s hope the battery won’t get worse here.

In term of battery life, you get of a standard 42 Wh battery and should last for around 5 to 6 hours. I adjust the brightness into 4 percent and doing some works and always end up with 5 and half screen usage for most all of time. The battery is not so dependable for long term usage because you at least need to charge it twice for finishing all your work in a single day. Unfortunately, you have no other option than always carrying its charger around.

Final Thought

The Inspiron 14 5482 does not promise anything new from its predecessor, but its performance might make you are interested to take a look into it. The new Whiskey Lake processor is faster and more reliable than before and it’s combined with the rest of features such the screen and display nicely here. I just see the storage as quite slow, so make sure to add the SSD storage here. If you have not made any decision for a device to afford, then I suggest you to take a look into this device. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it. Make sure to check our latest article and mind leaving some comments for further assistance regarding the article.
