Lenovo Thinkpad E585 (Ryzen 2700U, Full HD) 15 Inch Laptop Review

The Lenovo Thinkpad E585 is probably as the cheaper model of the Thinkpad E580 15. Both of these laptops basically almost feature the same thing with couple difference in hardware configuration. The Intel Core I7 processor and RX graphic card are no longer featured and it’s swapped with Ryzen 7 processor. The Ryzen 7 is actually a great processor especially when seeing its price point. It costs you just for under 1000 dollars and you will have a 15 inch device with decent performance and full HD resolution panel. I am impressed that Lenovo wants to fit so many things despite its cheap price tag.

As long as you care about the performance and don’t really think much about other thing, then you should be okay here. Lenovo has made some sacrifices in display quality and battery life, but I find this case as common as they need something to reduce its quality for making the price is possible. Like I said before, the performance is the most important thing you should consider here. Let’s take a look inside further and see how it works on us. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.

Design and Connectivity

In matter of design and overall look, the chassis looks pretty similar to the E580 in everything without any difference at all. The bulky and heavy chassis is no longer featured and they transform it completely into the ultrabook. The chassis now feels more durable, but also considered as slimmer than before. The entire chassis is covered by totally black finishing surface like being typical of Thinkpad. I also love it new narrower bezel here, it looks more modern and the big black bezel surrounded the panel is no longer featured here. They redone almost everything, but almost everything shows a good sign of improvement here.

As for the build quality, you will get a decent combination between carbon fiber deck and aluminum lid. I should say the build quality is not a big problem especially when seeing the keyboard deck holds the pressure pretty well. Warping is hardly seen unless you put some decent pressure into it. The same case found on the lid, the hinge is stable enough and won’t wobble during typing. As for the connectivity, still no Thunderbolt 3 ports but you have of USB type-C 2nd gen and couple other USB ports included of HDMI, Ethernet, and micro SD slot.

Display and Input

Lenovo Thinkpad E585 2 The display looks pretty standard, so put your expectation pretty low here. Fortunately, I need to say its brightness is relatively great and should offer you a decent viewing angle during the days. The panel manages to produce of only 60 % SRGB while having of 292 nits of brightness support. The glossy panel is no longer featured and swapped with matte screen. You might notice its screen clarity is relatively low, but in good way the screen does not glare too much during my usage. Should be good for daily usage, but not designed for professional usage like photo editing.

Moving into the input feature, the keyboard does not undergo any difference compared to its 14 inch model. I just notice it now has of numpad keys and making the rest of keys are smaller and made to slightly to the left. I just prefer the E480’s keyboard because the keys are more in centre, but this keyboard should offer a decent experience in typing. The keys feedback and resistant are decent even I should mention that not all of users will love its keys placement here. if you previously already has one of Thinkpad device, then you should know about this matter.

Performance and Battery

The Ryzen 7 2700U is sit at the most powerful ULV processor that AMD has right now. The processor has total of 4 CPU with up to 8 threads hyper threading support. All of the CPU clocked between 2.2 GHz to 3.8 GHz. The performance of this processor is actually depended on the temperature management. It scores for 142 and 619 points in both of CineBench single and multi-core tests and I only notice a slightly CPU throttling during of this case. For under 1000 dollars, I think this is the best performance anyone can expect. The Radeon Vega 10 integrated card is great and I see Rocket League is very playable although it’s stuck in the low setting.

One bad thing should be worth mentioning here is the battery life. The battery result is pretty average and only sits around for 4 to 5 hours. I notice the power consumption is quite big on this system and worse as they put a smaller battery capacity. The fan noise sometimes will kick out around 33 db and you should notice the battery will drain faster. Just make sure to always bring its charger or you would be in big trouble here.

Final Thought

The Thinkpad E585 won’t disappoint you at all in term performance since both of CPU and GPU will offer of decent power for any sort of work you want to do. The performance like I said before is the biggest selling point. The rest of stuff like display and battery are mediocre, but should meet your average standard and still considered as usable at all. However, there is just nothing special about it. Well, you cannot expect much from a budget business laptops and I think everything is done by Lenovo is more than sufficient here. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it. Make sure to check our latest article and mind leaving some comments for further assistance regarding the article.
