MSI has done a wonderful job for providing some decent gaming notebooks started from the cheapest price point for under 1000 dollars to the most expensive one ranging from 2000 to 3000 dollars. For these couple years, they don’t only really target the gamers with great budget, but they also focus their intention for making the low budget users to be able to afford their laptops. This is where the MSI GV62 stands out among the consumers. The system features of decent hardware specs for under 800 dollars. This is probably the cheapest device users can afford from MSI nowadays.
They really provide a decent option for gamers as long as they don’t really care about its overall look. Yeah, MSI quite sacrifices its material quality for making the price is possible. You cannot expect much from the design since it’s made from plastic and looks pretty standard at all. But, I am fully sure many people won’t mind at all because they know the most important aspect here is the performance. Let’s take a look inside and see how it works on us. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Case and Looks
In term of look, the design looks pretty simple and the material is something cannot be proud here. I have seen they already used this kind of design for years and might make you quite disappoint because something unique is almost non-existence here. Compared to ASUS TUF504 gaming which appeared in the same price level, I guess ASUS doing much better in term of overall look although the material quality looks similar here. The entire chassis is built from plastic and finished in red and black aluminum surface. The fingerprint becomes the biggest problem as it leaves a bad mark every time your hands are wet. It needs some efforts for completely removing it.
As for the build quality, the thing looks decent although you are not going to see something wonderful. The base or deck area is great and I don’t see a flex during typing. However, the lid cover is not as strong as I thought. I can twist the lid pretty easily and I hope they can improve this point for next year because it does look very bad. The viewing angle is also limited as the users only manage to adjust the viewing angle up to 135 degree only. The hinge is stiff and needs of improvement in my opinion.back to menu ↑
Connectivity and Maintenance Hardware
The missing of Thunderbolt 3 port is already expected as the price range is almost impossible for them to put one here. However, the rest of connectivity is decent as we have of four USB ports included of two USB 3.0 ports and USB type-C in the left and leaving of a single USB 2.0 on the right side. It also has of dual display port which supports up to 4K resolution in 60 Hz refresh rate. I have tested it with my 4K monitor and the input lag seems to be fine during my test. I don’t have any complaint about this matter, but I just hope the ports placements are slightly better and more balance.
I am pretty sure that the users will do at least doing of one upgrade to their laptop especially for adding more storage considering some games will take even more than 40 GB of space for the installing process. Here, the upgrade possibility is great, but you must open its entire 16 screws to get inside here. The thing gets worse as MSI puts the warranty sticker on the top of its screws. Removing it will break the warranty, but you can do it very carefully for making it not happened for this case. Inside, you will get access to the SSD, HDD, WIFI card, and the memory slots. Everything is accessible included the way for maintaining the CPU and GPU health.

Hardware and Gaming Performance
I really recommend you to afford the Core I5 model like I do here if you just need for gaming and don’t really bother of doing multi-tasking works. There is a 200 dollars price difference will save you a lot here. The I5 8300H processor is decent as it features of quad core processor and clocked at 2.3 GHz. Its performance is comparable with the I7 7700HQ we have last year and it runs pretty decent. In gaming, almost everything is handled by the GPU and you won’t have any problem at all in gaming performance. With the less money to spend, you could add of SSD considering we only have of 1TB HDD here.
The gaming performance in the same case runs like I expected. The processor is accompanied by GTX 1050 TI 4GB graphic card and should run every single games either with medium setting in performance mode or the high setting for high quality graphic mode. I have tried of Battlefield 5 and Assassin Creed Odyssey and I can just stick with for hours for completing quest and doing multi-player mode with my friends. Any other older or upcoming games should be similarly playable and I think this is a decent way to enjoy your gaming.back to menu ↑
The MSI GV62 2018 inch has received of many good praises from both of reviewers and consumers thanks to its high performance hardware. For under 800 dollars, I think this the best thing they can offer to us as the consumers in term of performance. In other case, the design and build quality are quite bad, but I think consumers will pick over the performance rather than its look. With being said, I have no reason at all to not recommend this laptop for you. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it.
