Chromebook might not be appeared to be as popular as Windows laptops among the consumers, but this operating system does promise a much better thing when we talk about low cost product. While, there are so many good options in relative cheap price, Chromebook is remaining as the best option to consider because it always offers of decent specs in pretty decent price. For example, one can afford of Samsung Chromebook 3 for under 200 dollars and making it fully usable as your work companion. Today, we are going to take a look into Dell Chromebook 11 3181 which looks pretty interesting here. They just announced it recently and coming with better hardware than before.
Inside, you should see of Celeron N3060 alongside with 4GB of RAM and 16GB EMMC storage. It then features of 11 inch screen display with non-touch screen support. Dell also offers the same model, but with convertible design at this case although it costs you a higher price here. If you have not spent your money for buying a notebook, then you might need to take a look for this one. Let’s see how it works for satisfying our needs. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Design and Connectivity
The 3181 comes with a pretty basic thing in term of design. The chassis itself is fully designed from plastic and then covered with some kind of polycarbonate finishing. There is almost nothing to talk about the design because it looks so simple and might fail to satisfy you here. The build quality is quite decent although I notice of flex in both of lid cover and keyboard deck. I see the keyboard deck rest to pressure very badly while the lid cover does a better thing for this case. Keep in mind, I won’t give it much complaint considering on how cheap the price point is here.
For adding something unique or better, Dell adds some kind of rubberized material surrounded the chassis. These things should protect the device from short distance fall although they forget the same thing in lid cover. Yeah, the lid cover is not protected and might being a big problem here. On the good side, its hinge system is decent as it allows you to adjust the viewing angle up to 180 degree. As for the connectivity, there are two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, audio jack, micro SD slot, and the proprietary charging slot. Everything looks decent, but needs of improvement in many cases.back to menu ↑
Display and Input
The most common panel used in budget notebook is probably a TN panel and this is the case we are seeing right now. They offer us an 11 inch 1366 x 768 resolution display with TN panel. In term of quality, the panel looks washed out and coming with limited viewing angle. In my opinion, the screen looks quite ugly, but I see the point where it’s just impossible for them to add better thing here. In the plus side, the brightness is relatively bright at 300 nits. You are not needed to adjust the brightness too often because it looks very bright even during the days.
As for the input support, the keyboard is fully usable for long term usage. The keys feel cheap and flex are noticeable, but the keys coming with decent travel distant as the keys are well spaced. The keys feedback are slightly soft, but should be good enough when you get used with it after a while. The backlit support is nowhere to be found and you might find a right way for allowing you to type in low light condition. Overall, the keyboard is usable at all for demanding type of typing work.

Performance and Battery
The Intel Celeron N3060 is slightly more powerful and having lower power consumption than its processor. Intel is now using of 14 nm manufacturing processor and will provide a better battery life. Unfortunately, the CPU is remaining with dual core and the CPU clock is still clocked at 1.1 GHz. Intel might have Celeron processor with quad core variants, but most of manufactures use this processor in higher price point product. In term of performance, the N3060 is good enough especially considering our work are just related to browsing, editing document, and streaming for movies.
One good thing you should expect here is the battery life. I have tested the battery for some heavy tests and it will easily last for 9 to 11 hours in single charge. I am so impressed considering the brightness from the screen is very bright. I set the brightness into 40 % and still can see everything in good way and even having great battery life. Fully charging the battery from 0 to 100 should be done for around 2 hours. No fast charging method available and the USB charging feature is completely absent on this case.back to menu ↑
We probably know that cannot really expect some good things from low budget laptops, but Dell Chromebook 3181 provides us some great things better than its competitors. You are not going to find a high quality screen or impressive design, but it does our every single job nicely through its decent keyboard and overall usable 11 inch screen. If you are a student with limited budget to spend, then I would recommend you to consider of this as your top consideration. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it.
