ASUS Zenbook UX330UA-AH54: The right mix of price and power

Looking for a portable laptop but not willing to sacrifice processing power? An ultrabook is most likely to fit the bill, and the recently released ASUS Zenbook UX330 with a KabyLake processor is among the best on the market.

There are plenty of Windows and ChromeOS laptops out there with a lower price point, and there are plenty of other laptops with more powerful hardware. But the Zenbook finds a sweet spots between power, portability, and price.

This is the sort of laptop that you can throw in your bag and not feel its weight because it’s so small. It’s unobtrusive to have on your lap while you’re in class or in a meeting. Yet, despite its tiny size, it still has the power to handle plenty of multitasking and even light gaming.

Let’s take a look at what the Asus Zenbook UX330 offers.

Mini Theater

ASUS Zenbook UX330UA-AH54ASUS has done everything they can to make sure this tiny laptop is a symphony for the senses. Its 13.3” screen comes in full HD 1920×1080 resolution and features anti-glare so it looks great from any angle. Many of the super-budget laptops on the market feature resolution only half as good as this.

Coupled with the visual feast, ASUS upgraded the speakers from previous Zenbook models. This laptop features a SonicMaster quad-speaker system that can pump out sound like you wouldn’t expect from a laptop of this size. It also features a host of equalizer options to customize the audio to your liking.

ASUS Zenbook UX330UA-AH54 HardwareThe ASUS Zenbook UX330 comes with 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a 2.5GHz i5 Kaby Lake processor. The graphics are Intel integrated graphics. It runs Windows 10.

Kaby Lake processors are part of Intel’s new line of processors, just released this year. For computers in general, this is excited because more powerful processors are always great. For laptops, however, the improved architecture of the processor provides that added bonus of a longer battery life as the processor can do more with less power.

ASUS reports that the Zenbook UX330’s battery will last all day. Specifically speaking, consumers are reporting the battery lasts between 6-8 hours on one charge depending on use. My current laptop also has a 6-8 hour battery life, and trust me, that’s plenty enough.

The inclusion of an SSD instead of a HD will improve that battery life as well, indirectly. Because SSD storage allows your computer to start and shut off in a matter of seconds, it’s easy to close down the computer any time there’s a gap in usage.

An added bonus to this is the fingerprint login. Fingerprint login has recently become standard on smartphones, and apparently it’s making its way to computer as well. I’d normally see fingerprint login as a gimmick, and it’s still no major selling point, but the SSD synergizes well with fingerprint login thanks to how quickly you’ll be able to shut down and get back into it.

An added bonus is that fingerprint login makes you feel pretty sci-fi.

The ASUS Zenbook UX330 features two USB 3.0 ports and one USB-C port. It also features a mini-HDMI port and an SD card reader. It does not features a VGA port, though the number of uses for VGA are quickly dwindling. It also does not feature a DVD/CD drive, if that’s an issue of concern.

The keyboard has a 1.5mm key travel, which is fairly standard. Expect a reasonably responsive keyboard instead of one of those tiny keyboards where the keys feel like they were smashed in with a sledge hammer.

The ASUS Zenbook UX330 looks to be a fantastic computer for the purpose it serves, just make sure that you’re buying it to fulfill that purpose.

If all you’re looking for is a cheap laptop that you can write in a word processor and have one or two tabs open, you can find much cheaper laptops for this purpose, like a Chromebook.

If you’re looking for a mobile gaming machine, you can find much more powerful laptops that will serve you well into the future.
