LG Gram 15” 15Z980 Review – Light And Thin Laptop

Last year, I reviewed the previous version of LG Gram and I was so happy with everything LG put there especially considering they offered of decent price for it. The price is cheaper than Macbook Pro and its other competitors and it got so many people interested to take look on it. Now, LG finally making progress and refreshes it with something new. The good news here, the hardware component is significantly improved here with all of them are top tier component. The bad news here, there is huge different in term of price in comparable with its last version.

It nearly costs you around 2000 dollars and its quite expensive for standard laptop right now. Moreover, we also have similar choices at the same price like Surface Book 2 and Macbook Pro that always remaining people’ favorite choice. So, how this machine stands out with its expensive price? Well, we find it soon. That is what we are going to talk about it. We are going to talk about it further and see how it works on our further test. To make it easier for you to understand, let’s we jump into the article.

Light And Solid Design

Similarly like they did last year, the company is putting of magnesium alloy material. The entire chassis is built on from this material and later covered with matte surface from the top to its bottom. The design is so simplistic, so do not surprise on not finding any huge things here. The magnesium alloy might not as beautiful as other materials, but keep in mind that this material is durable, but light. As light as its chassis may be, the build quality is impressive here. I love its design especially seeing its lid that easily to be twisted and moving around. The edge to edge overlay and extra bezel really contribute to its flexibility.

The lightweight design gives me weak impression at first because the hinge and system feels so weak and not durable. That is my first impression about it, but soon changed when I am making progress. The weak hinge is actually not that weak like I though as it holds the base pretty well when I start typing on it. The lid is strong enough to prevent any teetering and becoming looser during your work. Despite of its bad impression, the construction quality for the Gram is top notch in my opinion.

Input Devices

LG Gram 15 2 The full size keyboard is a standard QWERTY layout like you find on many similar devices. Here, there are half sized arrow keys, NumPad, and power button that located on top right of the corner. In comparable with Dell XPS 13, I think these keys are more tactile and offering better experience on typing. The NumPad keys are greatly placed as they decide to put it tightly and narrower. The plan is to save the space for the QWERTY keys and its totally work here. The keys are well spaced and never give you cramped during your work.

The same impression goes to its touchpad. The touchpad features of wide and smooth surface that should help you on navigating through the system. It’s fully supported by multi gestures feature from Windows 10 and I do not have any problem on swiping, jumping cursor and doing any stuff. The integrated mouse keys are top notch here and there is nothing bad to say from this point.

The Hardware Performance

Let’s make our way into the things that makes its price going so high, the performance. The Intel I7 8550U is huge leap from its Kaby Lake version, but sadly the integrated graphic card from Intel is not giving any hug impact on graphical performance. I have no problem of running demanding apps like Photoshop or Corel, but sadly the thing is still slower than any laptop with Vega 8 or Pascal dedicated graphic card. For some reasons, LG does not want to put of dedicated graphic card for its expensive price. This is a huge deal because people might just swap their choice into Acer Swift 3 that promises lot of better things.

Luckily, there are few great things that should cover its performance flaw. The 16GB DDR4 RAM is fast and reliable for doing multitasking work without any lag or stuttering. As for storage, the 1TB SSD is something to proud here. Its SSD and not HDD and means we receive of much faster and bigger storage at the same time. This might be a huge deal for now as 1TB SSD will make you crazy with its price if you plan to buy it separately. The last thing I want to talk about here is the battery life. Be happy here because the battery should give you up to 15 hours of usage with medium setting of brightness.
