14 inch laptop is a very common device available in market right now. There are dozens of them started from ASUS, Lenovo, and even Acer that each of them provides such a great choice for users. HP is started to do the same case here with Probook 440 G5 that is coming with new repacked design, IPS panel, quad core CPU, and a glass touchpad panel. Everything looks promising if only the price could go lower here. As I said before, HP has so many tough competitors and the only ways they might win the competition is by making it slightly cheaper.
Their competitions nowadays are Lenovo Thinkpad E480 and Dell Latitude 3470. Both of them are having similar pricing and hardware component and coming from their big names here. Let’s see how the laptop might able to stand out among the crowded. I think its worth for us to take look inside and see how it works on us. That is what we are going to talk about here. To make it easier for you to take a conclusion, let’s start by jumping into the article.
My first impression for the design is great especially after seeing its new chassis. Here, they mainly combined of silver and black colors to makes it look professional and it actually works pretty well. The decisions to put of silver lining for outside and black finishing inside are appreciated here. A big difference shown here is located on the hinge systems that no longer use of two drop down systems, but featuring of a much wider and larger hinges. This new system helps to keep the screen loose enough and making it so easy to flip around on adjusting the viewing angle although the angle is only limited to 135 degrees. However, it’s nice to see a new adjustment here.
One thing they should improve here is the material. A plastic material is once again used here even though they add of aluminum surface for the deck area. Still, many manufactures started to ship their mid-range units with all metal construction and this is a big loss for HP. As for the connectivity, thankfully they do it right here. There are total of three USB ports which one of them is USB type-C first generation for accompany on much faster way to deliver of our data. The position for each port is comfortable although I suggest them to place the type-C port slightly down little bit.back to menu ↑
A Not Right Place for Multimedia Users
I am having a huge complaint for display here. At first, the 1920 X 1080p produces only 60 percent of SRGB color that far from my expectation. For the price, I hope it has at least 80 to 90 percent that becoming most devices standard right now. As the result, the color accuracy and images quite not appealing for streaming movies. You should notice some colors are bland and not accurate. The high level brightness could help to deliver better experience, but sadly with 221 nits of brightness, the thing is not just useful here. I recommend you to find better recommendation for entertainment usage.
As for the keyboard, I am going to give my big appreciate here because the keyboard is so well designed here. The Chiclet style backlighting keyboard offers a six rows keys and feel so comfortable for typing in long usage. The keyboard layout is familiar to its older brother, the HP Probook 450 without only a numpad is missing here. This is a normal case because it’s hard to fit of numbers pad in such a small chassis. For productivity usage, I see of it on having everything you need here.

Hardware Performance and Maintaining
Similar to many high-end business systems, The Intel Core I7 8550U from Kaby Lake refresh generation is used here. The processor is equipped with four cores CPU at 1.80 GHz default clock. With appropriate cooling, the CPU manages to reach 3.7 GHz clock rate and very impressive considering it’s an ULV processor and not a power based one. Combining with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD, you are getting a stable and fast performance here. No noticeable lag or stuttering as long as you do not have too many things on background here. 8GB RAM is limited here, so better to maintain every application you have.
Luckily, maintaining the hardware is possible and easy to do. There are only two maintenance hatches and giving you a direct access to memory and storage slots. Another free SSD and HDD slot are available if you want to make some upgrades here. Adding a 1TB HDD is big enough because I know that 256GB will be crowded in a very short time. I love a company that always gives more support for their users. I guess more and more manufactures need to do similar case here.back to menu ↑
The Probook 440 is a very mixed laptop based on my review and test. Few important parts like keyboard and performance meet my expectation, unfortunately the display are is some sort left behind here in term of quality. A big improvement is needed if HP really wants to win this war over Lenovo or Dell. If you are a power user, I think the device is a perfect place to leave your choices. Just do not go for it, if you demand for entertainment. The choice is always yours, so take any conclusion you want. Feel free share your idea and comment below. At last, thank you for reading the article and see you next time.
