One of my favorite laptops of all of time is back again with improvement over its entire sectors. Now, it’s the time for Dell to make their XPS 15 into more powerful and more portable than before. The Dell XPS 15 is a seriously incredible thin and powerful 15 inch system. The device is powered by Intel new powerful Kaby Lake G processor that combined with AMD Radeon RX Vega graphic card. We all know that Intel and AMD finally making a duet by releasing their combination of CPU and GPU. This system is considered as one of the earliest one on using it and I really want to know how it performs and handling the battery consumption.
The company is extremely of sure the product is going to be a huge success considering the last they did it pretty well. With all of its improvement, there are of course there are few bad things to talk about here. Yeah, some past problems like poor battery life and weird camera placement are back again for some reasons. Well, let’s just talk about it further and see how it works on satisfying our needs. To make it easier for you to take a conclusion, let’s we jump into the article.
Dell does not revamp much of its design, but the new chassis is incredibly thin and light. You would still get of empty and plain lid design here, but the lighter and thinner chassis really makes a big difference here. Opening the lid, you soon find of its 15 inch screen that followed by 4K resolution. The bezel surrounded the chassis is so minimal and what they called as Infinity Edge display on their marketing is true here. On deck area, I notice the keyboard setting is quite different as they put of new Maglev keyboard that feels so soft and comfortable to put your wrist here. It’s good to see new improvement is available here.
Talking about the portability, the system is measured at around 13.9 x 9.2 x 0.6 inches and coming with 4.4 pounds of weight. 4.4 pounds for 15 inch ultrabook is amazing especially considering that only Apple is able to deliver similar thing here. The Macbook Pro 15 is nearly at 4.2 pounds and making it lighter than this device. Unfortunately, Macbook is thicker here, but keep in mind it’s not convertible and thicker chassis means harder to carry it around on single hand. I think Dell is much better despite its heavier weight.back to menu ↑
Solidly Designed in All Sectors
The system is not stopping impress me especially after seeing its bright and crisp 4K display. The 4K panel is pretty amazing as it manages to produce of 160 percent of color space SRGB and nearly 400 nits of brightness. It’s a perfect combination that delivers of high quality experience in both of enjoying your work or spending of your time on checking movies. This is probably one of the best display I have tested in 2018 and very recommended for taking care of photo or editing video. On bad side, the higher resolution panel might bring performance drop on battery.
As for the keyboard, I was bit skeptical after Dell said it only features of just 0.6 mm travel key. Yeah, 0.6 is pretty low and even 1.2 to 1.3 mm is not enough for many years. Surprisingly, the keyboard works so great on helping to finish my document. The company reduces the thickness and adding of metal plate and magnet to minimalize the resistance. The typing experience is fantastic as I manage to type for 105 words per minute in solid 1.3 percent of error rate. This is the improvement that users expect besides than performance.

Performance and Power Consumption
The Intel Core I7 8705G is a beast in term of performance and efficient power. The quad core CPU features of 3.1 GHz default clock and 4.1 GHz maximum clock. We usually will find of Intel UHD graphic card here, but Intel makes it different by putting of AMD Radeon RX Vega M Integrated GPU. The processor is finally looking new direction and it’s all thanks to AMD. These combinations of hardware are able to score for 150 thousands on 3DMark Ice Storm which is impressive considering what we get here is the integrated card. For gaming, the performance is very similar to having GTX 1050 and means every game playable there would be also playable here.
I have to say the higher resolution display and strong performance really cost its battery life. For most of time, the maximum duration it reaches is only nearly 7 hours in single charge. I already drop the brightness as little as possible, but not so helpful. Charging it twice is likely needed to run it for entire day. Thankfully, the USB type-C port allowed you to charge it over power bank. Just make sure to pick of power bank that has fully supported by fast charging to reduce the charging time. Well, we at least have a solution for this problem.back to menu ↑
What Dell has done here is totally impressive by making it so portable and so powerful at the same time. There is no really such bad thing to talk about here although the battery life is low here. Just keep in mind there is no way for us to get both of performance and efficiency at the same time. This problem is also a common issue on a gaming laptop. If you have more budgets to spend, then this likely should be a perfect device for you. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration.
