Lenovo Ideapad 520S Review – A Full HD and Affordable Ultrabook

The ultrabook segment for some reasons is always dominated by premium devices since back in the 2015. The main reason is because of the upcoming trend bezel-less display. There is no way for manufactures to put it in on lower end product and this is why the thing is happening right now. However, the trend is slowly slowdown and right now we have seen some ultrabooks that considered as pretty cheap. The good example here is Lenovo Ideapad 520S that offers of sleek design and powerful performance in such affordable way. The system is powered by Intel 8th generation processor for only around 700 dollars. The device is then equipped with full HD display which is something hard to see here.

By seeing all of specifications, I think the laptop is pretty nice deal for users in low budget. Well, not all of users want to spend for more than 1000 dollars for a portable device. There always thousands of users look for cheaper approach. I think its worth for us to take look inside and see how it works on us. That is what we are going to talk about here. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.

Design and Connectivity

In comparison with its predecessor, Lenovo has improved overall design with much better direction. The design now looks and feels like premium machine at all thanks to their nice finishing and material selections. The material selection is remaining similar here as they put of aluminium for display lid and palm area and plastic for base area. If you take look, then you probably notice the bezel is now narrower and surrounded with diamond edges that look impressive. In term of build quality, I think the metal body is stable and durable enough although still not comparable with Dell XPS 13. The thing is pretty normal because we have a big price different here.

Moving into the inside, we would find a full size keyboard and 14 inch screen that surrounded in quite thin bezel. At both left and right side, I am finding the ports connectivity is well complete here. There are two USB 3.0 ports and a single USB type-C without Thunderbolt 3 support. The proprietary port for charging is used here and means it’s necessary to always bring the charger since the type-C port is not supported for charging the battery, but it could charge of your smartphone. Overall, Lenovo puts such a well-built design here.

Keyboard and Display

Lenovo Ideapad 520S 2 In the result of new design direction here, the keyboard is getting some improvement here. The arrow keys are made slightly smaller in comparable with last generation. The right shift key is also smaller here as the result of complaint by many users that think some keys are too big here. In term of quality, I think Lenovo is always known for their great keyboard and the same thing is found here. The keys pressures are balance and crisp moreover the travel distant is perfect. The backlit support is even featured here and coming with two levels illumination. I am impressed on everything they add here.

As for the display, well the 14 inch display features of 1920 x 1080p IPS panel. The panel itself is much better than its lower model that only coming with HD resolution and TN panel. Here, the viewing angle is great and the matte finishing is my favorite here because it’s not so reflective. The display manages to produce for 65 percent for SRGB color and getting 256 nits of brightness. The result is not bad considering we already have so many good things here.

Performance and Battery

The Core I7-8550U processor is becoming the main favorite choices for manufactures right now because it’s already quad core, but still producing relatively low power consumption for its powerful performance. The CPU itself features 1.8 GHz base clock that could be boosted with higher frequency with proper cooling. This is a good processor in my opinion because the performance and battery usage are so balance here. For running every day task, you would never have any problem here and even running Photoshop and doing video rendering are okay here. Like I said before, the CPU is now quad core and means doing multitask works are much faster right now.

Lenovo equips the Ideapad with 30 Wh and 2 cell batteries here that should last for 9 to 10 hours in single charge. The result itself is very varied depending on system setting, activities, and brightness level. For most all of time, the 8 hour is a standard here. The result is not bad although many similar competitors offer better battery. Keep in mind, they might have bigger battery, but sometimes the performance is lower there.

Final Thought

The Lenovo 520S is the most balance machine I have ever seen in 600 dollars price range. The performance, design, keyboard, battery and everything are great although some parts can be better here. For the price, I am pretty satisfied here and finding similar result is hard here. I see similar choices here at ASUS with F510UA, but the keyboard is not very comfortable here. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration here. I just hope the information is good enough for you. Feel free on checking our latest article and mind leaving any comment for further assistance.
