The Dell Chromebook 5190 is the company’s latest attempt to seriously to take some serious cases on Chrome OS. They improve many things included bringing more powerful performance into such a small and durable machine. The system is now powered by Intel’s Apollo Lake generation processor that basically 30 percent more powerful than before. For design, I think not much different here found here, but the rugged chassis is back again here and still recommend for students or users who love to move around without afraid breaking their system in accidentally case. Dell also puts an affordable price point here which is becoming the main selling point here.
One thing that people looking for from Chromebook is battery life and yes the machine is fully capable to use for entire day with only single charge. Everything looks and working fine as they are talking about and I think its worth for us to take look inside and see how it works on satisfying our needs. Let’s hope it turns out to be nice deal here. That is what we are going to talk about here. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Design and Connectivity
As for cheap device, there is nothing special about its design as it looks very plain and simple. The chassis itself is created from plastic that finished in black finishing. I love its little finishing touch here and when holding it on my hands feel smooth and not slippery. In term of detail, you would only find of company’s logo placed at the center and Google’s logo placed at top left side. The look like I said before is not special here, but there is one left thing that makes it special here. Dell said the laptop has received MIL STD 810G durability certificate and promises a fully capability of handling bumps, drops, and even extreme temperature condition. You could see the entire edges are covered with rubberized material that would cover the chassis from drops.
Moving into the inside, you should find a 11 inch screen that accompanied by a spill proofed keyboard. Keep in mind, the keyboard could only take nearly 12 ounce spill of waters and they will start leaking if you add more than it. The keyboard is spilled proof and not water proof. As for the connectivity, we have of USB type-C and USB 3.0 ports at the right side and some useful ports like micro SD slot and a headphone jack. Overall, the design and connectivity are worth for the money we spend here.back to menu ↑
Display and Keyboard
Having a much smaller screen means you do not really need to have a high resolution here. The 11.6 inch screen is featured alongside 1366 x 768 resolution. The TN panel here looks sharp and accurate although not considered as the most accurate one here. I am testing the display further and find out it covers 69 percent SRGB color and 258 nits for brightness. Well, the result is not bad here as I have seeing the worst case here. Interestingly, the panel is touchscreen which completely useful on running Android Application. The problem is some Android applications require of touchscreen navigation, but thankfully everything working fine here.
As for the keyboard, I guess the keyboard is decent at least for every day usage. Here, the keys come with 1.3 mm travel distant and requiring of 74 grams punctuation force. It’s not bad at all, but sadly the keyboard is quite shallow for some reasons. I manage to get of very good result on typing test, but it takes couple tried for me to get used here. Well, I cannot make any complaint considering the price itself, but at least the keyboard is still useful for doing all of stuff.
|Dell Chromebook 5190||Main Specs|
|CPU||Intel Celeron N3350 Dual Core 1.1 GHz|
|Graphics||Intel HD Integrated Card|
|OS||Windows 10 Home|
|Memory||4GB DDR4 Memory|
Software and Hardware Support
The laptop is running of Chrome OS in top of its hardware configuration. The system is running at the top of Intel Celeron N3350 from Apollo Lake generation, 4GB RAM, and 32GB EMMC. The processor itself is quite standard here, but should running fine here as Chrome is specifically to run at much lower specification than Windows. Theoretically, the same specification would run much faster than Windows here thanks to the compatibility support. With 4GB of RAM, we can run many things at the same time, but the problem is the storage is quite small here. Thankfully, everything running in cloud here and not becoming a big matter here.
One worthy feature worth mentioning here is battery life. Yes, the battery performs a well done job here. On single charge, it runs for 9 hours and 30 minutes on doing editing document, streaming, and browsing to internet. I guess carrying the charger is not necessary anymore as the battery result is more than we expect here. This could be a good option for students searching for a replacement for their old laptop, but does not want to spend much.back to menu ↑
The Dell 5190 is an affordable Chromebook that promises many good things and only few bad things to expect here. The performance, battery life, and screen are great for around 400 dollars. Similar option will not offer similar thing here. Still, the problems on keyboard and boring design have to consider here as everyone has their preference about this case. Well, the choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it. I just hope the information provided is good enough on making you an option.
