Dell Alienware 17 R5 AW17R5 Powerful Gaming Laptop Review

Dell has just announced of their Alienware new line up and the improvement they bring here is very promising to take look. I have just got my hand with Alienware 17 R5 and I am very impressed on seeing how sleek and thin it is in comparable with previous model. They still keep the old design, but the chassis is now much thinner and more portable to carry around. In term of performance, the thing is slightly improved with faster processor from 8th generation series. They even give us the Core I9 version in case the users really want of solid performance here.

The Alienware series has becoming one of user’s most beloved gaming systems as it features unique design and powerful performance in very competitive price. If you are looking for some rough and durable machine for gaming, then you should be in right place here. Well, I think its worth for us to take look inside and see how it performs on running some games and finding out how much the change worth for our money. That is what we are going to talk about here. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.

Design and Connectivity

The slimmer and thinner design is introduced as seeing a popular trend where the gaming console gets lighter like a traditional laptop. Thankfully, this is not the only thing Dell does here because they also add of more LED zones surrounded the chassis that looks so amazing. The LED is even fully customizable and allowing you to set any RGB color you want. Well, this is actually an old feature, but it’s good to see some improvement here. There are total of 13 LED zones you can customize to your needs. Talking about the weight, the system is now measured at 16.7 x 13.1 x 1.18 inches and weighting at 9.6 pounds.

In return as it’s quite heavy weight, the chassis itself thankfully feels solid and durable. The hinge system looks sturdier than before and now almost impossible to twist of. Moving into the inside, you soon see a full size keyboard that combined with gigantic size touchpad. The 17.3 inch panel sits nicely at the top of it alongside with Tobii Eye Tracker feature which not so useful for some users. As for the connectivity, we have of each USB 3.0 port at left and right sides which accompanied by Thunderbolt 3 ports, HDMI, mini display port, and a power port. Overall, both of design and connectivity are very promising.

Input Method and Display Quality

Dell Alienware 17 R5 AW17R5 2 Almost every gaming machine is already shipped with island type keyboard, but here Alienware still carrying of their traditional layout. This is not considered as a bad thing because the keyboard has very well-spaced keys and solid actuation. It feels like I am typing in bouncing mattress and pretty much dependable for long usage. I manage to get of 85 words per minute which better than I got last year. The keyboard itself is still not as comparable with Steelseries keyboard from MSI, but their improvement is worth to try at least once here. This could be the consideration for taking it as replacement for your old system.

As for the display, the quality does not disappoint me here. The 17 inch display features of 1920 x 1080p resolution and producing a solid 100 percent SRGB color space. It looks crisp and detail to any content you see here. You will see how vivid and detail it is when you playing of The Witcher 3. And for brightness, you see of 352 nits panel and looks bright enough even for outdoor usage. I do not really have anything to complaint from its display considering how pretty the content we can expect here.

Gaming, VR, and Battery

For this review, I receive the lower end model that coming with Core I7 8750H processor and GTX 1070 graphic card. The higher end model should cover Core I9 processor and GTX 1080, but keep in mind it costs you lot of money here. The standard unit itself is already good enough even for gaming in high or ultra-setting. Some games like Fortnite, Far Cry 5, and PUBG are playable up to 60 FPS at highest setting. The performance is very satisfying and also allowing you to enjoy of VR gaming in stable and solid framerate. If you expect something powerful and having a sufficient budget, then I recommend you to take look into this system.

Another last worth mentioning feature here is the battery. The company adds of 99 Wh battery which considered as the highest one I have seen here. It easily lasts for 4 to 5 hours depending on your activities. The battery performance is pretty comparable with Gigabyte Aero series because they put similar amount of battery capacity here. I guess the manufacture should start shipping their laptop with bigger battery like this one because users deserve for something better here.

The display and performance are impressive and becoming the biggest selling on it.
