Toshiba Portege X20W (7200U, 8GB) Convertible Laptop Review

Toshiba Portege X20W is an extremely high performance and ultra-thin which promises of long last battery life. The laptop itself is incredibly thin at just of 15 mm height and featuring of active cooling inside. Keep in mind, there are so many thin and light laptops available right now, but nearly single of them suffer one issue, the temperature. Even HP is fail to make the Spectre 13 is actively good under heavy load. Now Toshiba is trying similar thing with the Portege series especially with X20 model which only has 12 inch screen size. I really want to know how it holds during my heavy tests.

The X20W is available right now for under 1000 dollars and it seems the manufacture heavily drops the price because its unpopularity. Many users just pick of ASUS, Dell, or HP instead of Toshiba for this case because for these few years they are fall behind in this category. But, it does not mean this system would be bad as people think because I have checked it for couple of weeks and everything is running almost like I expect. We are going to talk about it further on this article and let’s see how it works.

Case and Looks

I am so impressed on seeing how thin and light it is. Toshiba is even said that this Portege is basically considered as the slimmest and thinnest available with 7th generation processor. Its weight for around 1.024 KG and measuring only at 18 x 10.7 x 2.8 inches, keep in mind 1 KG is totally amazing for a laptop at this size. I see it as more impressive considering it has a fully rotatable 360 degree system which gives more freedom and portability into our hands. The only reason for making it possible is putting of magnesium alloy material instead of plastic. And yeah, they built the chassis with combination of magnesium and metal.

The durability is everyone concern and at this case just throw any of your worries because both of stability and rigidity are done in such a good way. The base and keyboard area are strong enough to endure of heavy pressure although the lid cover is slightly flexible which is pretty normal here. The hinge system then created from metal and feels so sturdy and flexible at the same time. Opening the display is really easy, but won’t get you easily flip it over. Toshiba is really successful of making a flexible, but yet durable hinge system.

Display and Connectivity

Toshiba Portege X20W 2 The display for under 1000 dollars looks pretty amazing in my opinion. The 12 inch screen features of full HD resolution and covered in matte finishing and Gorilla Glass 4 protection. The touchscreen works incredibly well included with stylus pen. Drawing and taking a note feels responsive at this case if you expect for this feature. I did of measurement with Colorimeter and found of interesting result here. It successfully covers of 97 % SRGB color and getting of 410 nits of brightness. The brightness and color accuracy are made impressively well. It’s such a nice and comfortable place for streaming movies at your weekend.

As for the connectivity, there are only two ports to depend for connecting all of your devices. It means buying the external dock is necessary as you need more than a single port here. Thankfully, there are lot of choices available in Amazon for a good price. You use the Thunderbolt 3 port for doing anything included of charging the battery, connecting it to bigger monitor, and even moving your data. HDMI is completely gone here. Like I said before, external dock is necessary unless you do not want to always plug your devices.

Performance and Battery

For once again, we see of Intel I5 7200U which commonly used in premium laptops. I guess the manufactures have no longer choice since the AMD A series processor is underwhelmed in term of performance and also suffers of throttling issue. On the right side, the 7200U provides of good things in both of performance and power consumption. The dual core CPU produces lot of power on its low 15 TDP watts. Users with light and medium activities for office and entertainment purposes won’t find any issue. Keep in mind the hardware is based on what you pay and not upgradable at all except for battery itself. Memory and SSD are soldered to mainboard.

Surprisingly, the temperature is really fine and only goes around 30 to 40 degrees. This temperature is very normal for such a 2 in 1 system and overall 100 % better than HP Spectre. The similar impression goes to its battery which lasts longer than I thought. The 44 Wh battery can last for 9 to 11 hours in fully charge capacity. I tested it by included of heavy browsing and some editing document. The battery charged rapidly through type-C and takes only 30 minutes to fully charge it. This is the biggest selling point to expect here.

Final Thought

There is almost nothing to hate about Toshiba X20W and I am so confused why it does not get popular like it’s supposed to be. The design is great and yet durable and even more impressive as the performance and temperature are totally fine. The ports connectivity is limited, but once again we still have of a single USB 3.0 to depend on. Yet, everything we find here is truly amazing especially considering its price. This is going to be my top recommendation for 12 inch convertible device and finding similar option at the same price is hard. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it.
