Macbook Pro 13 2018 (8259U, 8GB) Laptop Review

It’s been nearly 7 months since Intel released their 8th gen CPU and there is no sing for Apple to upgrade their Macbook Pro. Yeah, the late 2017 version Macbook is still powered by 7th gen CPU although the manufacture has a chance for upgrading it with more powerful component. Surprisingly, Apple quietly upgrades their Macbook series and suddenly released this month. The system now sports of 8th generation processor and once again featuring the same design. Interestingly, they put of Coffee Lake U gen CPU instead of Kaby Lake U we see in many similar system. The I5 8259U is never used in any system now and Apple being the first one.

I expect of some performance improvement and the thing I expect is truly happened although the performance is not really what I want here. Another additional changed made here is located on its display. Apple now puts of what they called as True Tone display which looks so good here. Well, we are going to take a look into it further and see how it works on us. Let’s see it turns out to be a better deal here. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.

Design and Connectivity

The design is being similar to its previous generation and for information that Apple has not changed it since 2016. The manufacture provides of different colors available to pick included of space gray and silver one. In term of quality, the chassis leaves a good impression and there is nothing to complaint about it. The plastic material is quite old considering not most of premium devices ship with either of magnesium or aluminum, but for long term usage this chassis is truly good. The overall weight is remaining similar around 3 pounds and coming with similar dimension at 8.4 x 12 x 0.6 inches.

The connectivity is then big concern for everyone and Apple is considered as the worst at this case. There are total of four USB Thunderbolt 3 ports which required buying separated adapter for 20 to 40 dollars. Keep in mind, buying external adapter is needed as there is no way to plug your external HDD or USB drive since the port is different. Thankfully, the 3.5 mm audio jack is still there and the 2.4 GHz WLAN support is fast and dependable. The overall impressions are relatively good here although you might find better things in its competitors like HP Spectre 13 and Dell XPS 13.

Display and Input

Macbook Pro 13 2018 2 The display is being the biggest selling point here as it looks wonderfully stunning in term of brightness and color accuracy. The resolution is similar at 2560 x 1600 resolution and the IPS panel is being used and I have no problem with it. The screen manages to produce of 99 % SRGB and 98 % AdobeRGB and getting of 504 nits of brightness. Like I said before, the quality is never being a problem here. Then, let’s move to what Apple has claimed as new feature here. The True Tone display is actually not a new thing in technology. Here, the screen is able to automatically adjusts its perfect color depending on the temperature and light ambient. For a good example, when you put your smartphone torch into the display, you should see the screen becomes yellowish in order to give better clarity here. This feature is firstly introduced in iPhone and also used in many Android smartphones.

As for the input, the old Butterfly keyboard is back again here. Last year, the keyboard gets a huge criticized for its loud key strokes, but now Apple makes some adjustment by adding some kind of rubber behind to reduce the loudness. In experience, the keyboard is more quite, but keep in mind the travel distant is similar and very short. If you do not like their previous keyboard, then you would find similar experience here. In term of quality, I cannot give my review for now as it needs of further checking. You probably know there are so many users reported their keyboard is broken after just couple months of usages and I really hope similar case is not happened here.

Performance and Battery

The Intel I5 8259U processor is never made into public before Apple introduced it on their Macbook. The performance itself is never being significantly improved because Intel basically uses the same architecture and the performance per count is very similar to its Kaby Lake U version. In term of performance, you can expect of power between I5 8250U and I7 8550U in cost with its higher power consumption. The 15 watts TDP is gone and swapped with 28 watts one. The battery is being a cost for its performance improved and I really hope the battery would not be so bad here.

For my nearly three days usage, I always get nearly of 8 hours. I have tested it through browsing, editing some documents, and watches some movies. As comparison, Huawei Matebook X and Surface 13 capable of last for 9 to 10 hours and by seeing how it leaves only 1 hour behind, I need to say the battery is great considering the performance is better here. Keep in mind, the result might varied depending on your usage as the brightness is totally bright here. Reducing the brightness is a good solution for giving more battery life.

Final Thought

The Macbook Pro 13 2018 is a truly impressive laptop with all of quality it brings to us. The design, display, audio, performance, and battery are great if only the price is slightly cheaper here. Nearly 1800 dollars is not something cheap and with similar prices you can buy of Dell XPS 15 9575 with GTX 1050 as comparison. It’s up to you on deciding on what kind of right device for you. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it. Leaves some comments below and share your opinions about the related article.
