MSI GS73 Stealth 014 (8750H, GTX 1070) Gaming Laptop Review

The MSI GS73 Stealth is easily considered as the thinnest and lightest 17 inch gaming machine available right now thanks to its height that just around 19.4 mm. Despite of its incredible thin chassis, under the hood MSI manages to fit such an amazing of hardware inside and deliver a truly great performance. Unfortunately, while they make a design improvement toward their 15 inch model, the GS65, here they decide to keep the design remaining similar and only improving its connectivity. Now they put of two USB type-C instead of just one like we see in the previous generation.

I guess it should be better If they completely redesign everything as it should make the end users are interested to get into it considering how tough and competitive the market now. The Predator Helios 500 17 and Acer Aspire 7 might become tough competitors for MSI since both of them promise many similar things, but in much cheaper price. What makes MSI could win the competition is their big name which already well known among the gamers. Let’s take a look inside and see how it works on us. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.

Design and Connectivity

The most interested factor to see from this laptop is located on its design. The overall look actually looks a bit of common and pretty much like a typical of MSI, but you really need to see how thin and light the chassis is comparing to another system. The only system can compete really well with the device is the ASUS Zephyrus which has similar dimension and weight here. In term of look, what you get here is a very minimalistic design that created from aluminum and then finished with some kind of matte brushed finishing. The smooth surface is really comfortable touch and feels good enough to carry even with single hand.

One thing that MSI have to sacrifice is the rigidity. The build quality is great, but I really hope the chassis should be more rigid and tougher here. Pressing the keyboard area will make the area around it warped and the same case is happened when you try to twist the lid cover. I am seeing the reduced of amount of quality is quite bad considering I do not see similar case in Zephyrus. As for the connectivity, you have of Thunderbolt 3 port, USB type-C first generation, and also of standard USB type-A as the way for connecting your device and smartphone.

Display and Input

MSI GS73 Stealth 014 2 The 17 inch display serves itself very well in term of color accuracy and brightness. The manufacture provides us of two different screen configurations included the 4K one with 60 Hz refresh and the 1080P model with 120 Hz refresh. For this case, I am getting the 4K model and it looks really bright and solid for professional photo editing. The panel manages to cover of 97 % of SRGB color and having of 261 nits of brightness. For some reasons, they only put of 261 nits of brightness instead of 300 nits or even better as users will often take the laptop for outdoor usage.

As for the input, the SteelSeries keyboard is good enough to allow me steady typing my document for many hours. The feedback is impressive although the clatter is very shallow in my opinion. The RGB lighting looks promising here and adjustable through their application. What I really do not like is the touchpad. The integrated mouse touchpad feel less comfortable comparing it to any similar system with the same screen size. The size of touchpad itself is rather small and sometimes finding it hard to bold my entire document. Not a big problem since most of users will use of gaming mouse, but still worth mentioning here.

Hardware Performance

Intel has just announced their Coffee Lake generation processor and now almost all of gaming devices so far have used both of their Core I5 and I7 processor included the MSI with this laptop. Inside, they put of Intel I7 8750H which consisted of six cores CPU work in 2.2 GHz base clock. All of CPU fully supports of boosted clock and hyperthread and allowing doing many things at the same time and getting of much higher speed when it’s needed. This is a perfect companion for both of working and gaming thanks to its incredible power. As the companion, we have either of GTX 1060 and 1070 Max-Q. MSI puts of Max-Q graphic card here instead of the desktop model for matter of thermal issue.

In term of performance, I am seeing like 15 to 20 % lower as I compare it with the desktop graphic card model. Even though with that case, the performance itself still feels pretty much amazing as games so far always run in very high setting. There are not too many games that put of 1070 GPU as the system requirement and means you can safely use this GPU for many years without afraid for its performance. Everything is just fine if only you want to spend that much money here.

Final Thought

While the 8th generation processor brings an improvement on its performance, overall I am quite disappointed on seeing how minor the changes made in design for GS73 2018. I have seen some manufactures like HP and Acer have redesigned their gaming line up and I do not see why MSI should not do the same case here. Sometimes users will want something refreshing and for me MSI design is already too boring to see. If you do not mind with design and prefer to have of light and powerful system, then this should be a great option here.
