HP reintroduced their gaming series by releasing the Omen series in 2018. They started to upgrade the 15 and 17 inch model with 8th generation CPU and making slightly improvement in design. While I am very happy to see the improvement in CPU performance, HP is not doing anything to make the design looks better. I have seen that even Acer redesign their Predator Helios 300 and 500 series for making it looks more modern by putting bezel less display and all stuff, but the manufacture decides to keep everything all together. HP might be very well known in premium and business category, but in gaming they are always in lower place as the main selection.
Thankfully, they put some decent prices comparing to its competitors. For just under 1200 dollars, you will have of a gaming system fully equipped with 1060 graphic card and 120 Hz high refresh rate display. These two things become the biggest selling point to expect here with the current price. As long as you do not mind with old design and prefer of some performance, this could be the best option for you. Let’s take a look inside and see how it works for running some games. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Case and Looks
The Omen design overall catches our eyes thanks to its unique approach. There are two big vents located at the bottom of its back cover and not just making it as the way for reducing the heat, but also worked as the additional detail to overall design. The entire chassis itself is created from both of plastic and aluminum. The surface is covered by some kind of smooth matte finishing to all around its chassis. There is only one color option is available which included the black one and I am not sure HP would offer another option at this case. The design somehow looks pretty boring, but still considered as promising here.
Moving into the inside, they adjust the bezel around the screen is bit narrower, but I still find the bezel as thick especially at the bottom one. I am sure they can reduce the chin to be thinner and should offer more pleasant way for enjoying our entertainment. In center area, we will find a full size keyboard complete with numeric pads. I enjoy the keyboard pretty much, but I really hate its red backlit because when combined with black keys, you hardly see anything here. It’s better to put the backlit in other bright colors matched the keyboard design.back to menu ↑
Connectivity and Maintenance
The I/O connectivity is decent especially with neat Thunderbolt 3 support. Few important ports like standard USB, HDMI, and some legacy ports are available, but they put almost all of ports in back side which hardly to reach here. They almost leave the right and left sides completely empty with only some minor ports. I do not really like this kind of decision, but its back to matter of taste and you might see a difference opinion about it. Overall, the connectivity offered is better than I expect for its price, but they might need to improve the ports placement in the next generation.
Almost all of gaming laptops have of good maintenance support, but some of them don’t offer of maintenance hatch included the Omen. For getting inside, you need to remove total of five screws and means removing the entire back cover. Inside, you should find of two thermal solutions management, a single M.2 slot, 2.5 inch for HDD or SSD, and a big chunk of battery. All of slots used here and the only way to upgrade the component are by replacing them.

System and Gaming Performance
I have talked a lot about of Intel I7 8750H CPU because this is the commonly hardware used in 2018 alongside with Core I5 8300H. In term of performance, you would get of six cores CPU and all of them clocked in 2.2 GHz with fully capability for reaching higher clock in turbo mode and handling more than 4 tasks at the same time with hyper threading. This is far one of the best CPU Intel has right now for except the Core I9 which considered in difference class here. For supporting your games, I believe this processor is more than enough and even better considering we really do not need for 6 CPU for running games.
As for gaming experience, the 1060 should handle most of games without any problem in medium or high setting. Users can expect of 60 FPS for E-Sport games like Overwatch, DOTA 2, or Rocket League. For recent AAA games like Assassin Creed Origin, the performance should be around 40 FPS for some high setting and also getting 60 FPS in the lowest setting. The result so far is promising and even better with proper temperature management HP promised here.back to menu ↑
HP Omen 15 2018 model is a capable of gaming system for delivering of ultra-realistic gaming experience to users. The performance is the biggest selling point here alongside with its 120 Hz refresh rate display. There is no guarantee this device will get popular in 2018, but users with budget should pick of this one considering how well the hardware configuration is. The choice is back matter on you, so feel free to take any consideration about it. Mind leaves your comments below for further assistance regarding the article.
