Lenovo Chromebook C330 11.6 Inch (MT8173C, 4GB) Review

Lenovo has just released its several Chromebooks in range price of 200 to 500 dollars and one of the most interested one to consider is the Lenovo Chrombook C330. The notebook costs for under 300 dollars and seems to be more pricey than most of its competitors. But, you must keep in mind the C330 features a fully convertible design which allowing you to adjust several stances and new ways for using a laptop. If you demand for a truly portable device in budget range, this could be your best option in 2018. Chromebook might be lack in term of software and apps support, but the ecosystem is totally safe from malware or virus which can be its selling point.

Checking of its hardware specification, I am not finding something so amazing about it. Lenovo decides to put of Mediatek processor which comparable to Intel Celeron here, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB EMMC. I am totally fine with the memory capacity and the processor, but 64GB storage should never provide enough space for saving many things. Let’s take a look at it further and see how it works for satisfying our needs. That is what we are going to talk about on this article. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.

Design and Connectivity

Lenovo never disappoints us on providing a good design on its budget range device. I kind of like the C330 design despite it’s entirely built from plastic. Thankfully, they offer us such a nice finishing with silver aluminum finishing. No one will easily notice if it’s a budget device. In term of build quality, I am not seeing any bad thing about it. The base are holds my pressure pretty well, but I notice the lid cover is slightly too flexible and twisted easily. However, its 360 degree hinge system is sturdy enough and I am not having any problem for opening and closing it dozens of times.

With its only 11 inch screen and small chassis, no wonder its weight and dimension are considered as very portable. It features of 19.6 mm thickness and coming with 1.2 kg of weight. I easily put it into my small bag while carrying other things without any issue. Moving into right and left sides, you soon notice couple of USB ports. We have of standard USB ports and USB type-C for transferring and moving the data. Sadly, it still uses of convenient way for charging the battery in this case.

Display and Input

Lenovo Chromebook C330 2 The manufacture markets of an IPS panel during its marketing, but unfortunately the resolution is stuck in 1366 x 768 or HD and not full HD. In good side, the IPS panel is better in color accuracy and viewing angle. I can still see the screen correctly when looking it from right and left directions although I slightly notice the images quality slightly reduced here. The only problem of budget panel is the poor brightness distribution. It’s hard to see it during the days especially during the morning. Just make sure to adjust the brightness into the maximum and you are going to be fine.

As for the input method, I am surprised seeing how well spaced the keyboard is despite its small chassis. I could do fast typing with no issue even though you will never the best experience for typing in smaller system. In order to make the QWERTY keys are slightly in normal size, Lenovo must reduce some keys size are smaller. I find the navigation keys and are smaller than I though and being a big problem if you use it often during your days. The backlit support is completely missing, but the case is normal in this price point.

Performance and Battery

The Mediatek MT8173C is not a brand new processor and has been released in 2015. The processor itself is manufactured by using of 28 nm processor and for this case, the power consumption is slightly higher than most of modern processor. But, comparing to Intel processor which using of X86 architecture, the ARM processor uses lower power consumption and still promising of good performance. This Mediatek processor features of quad core CPU which divided into two different clusters. The small cluster consists of four CPU with Cortex A53 and the big cluster with Cortex A72 CPU. The performance for light tasks like browsing and document editing are impressive.

Chromebook is well known for its amazing battery life and I am seeing of similar case at this point. The small battery capacity can last for up to 7 hours and will last for entire day without any issue. The battery itself is comparable to ASUS Chromebook 11 C223NA which coming with similar feature and specification here. Like I said before, Chromebook is fall behind in matter of application support, but promises of long lasting battery as return. This can be your best consideration for replacing your old laptop.

Final Thought

The Chromebook C330 is proofing that affordable laptop is not always in front of consumers. The features and specification promised here are better than my expectation and it’s a good sign that Lenovo really cares about its consumers. I have almost nothing complaint about it besides than its old processor. I just hope they offer us a slightly new processor with better performance. However, its current performance is good enough as long as your work is related in just small usages. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it.
