Dell G3 17 (I5 8300H, GTX 1050) Budget Gaming Laptop Review

The Dell G3 17 is a newly introduced gaming notebook released to the market as the new replacement for the Inspiron gaming series. For years, Inspiron series is always well known for its quality despite coming with such an affordable price point. This year, they are back again and now coming with brand new hardware and proper naming. The system is now powered by Intel I5 8300H processor from Coffee Lake generation and GTX 1050 graphic card. There is not much difference in term of design and the improvement is basically seen on the hardware itself. For under 900 dollars, this probably considered as the cheapest 17 inch gaming users can afford right now.

Many gamer will prefer a gaming machine with screen bigger than 15 inch although their resolution might be different. In game specifically like MOBA, having a bigger screen is an advantage as you could see more content and broader view in surrounding of this case. This is the main reason why this type of device is so popular among the consumers. Let’s take a look inside and see how it works on us. That is what we are going to talk about on this article. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.

Case and Looks

As its price point is practically pretty low, Dell decides to go over with the old design in order to maintain the balance between performance and the price. I am not seeing any significant improvement in term of design compared to last year. The entire chassis is built from plastic and finished with some kind of matte black finishing. The exterior looks kind of cheap, but its stability is relatively good in my opinion. I love of its exterior finishing because it does not leave the fingerprint mark easily although I don’t a similar case toward its interior. The overall impression is great although some users might expect a better look from it.

Let’s talk about its build quality. Well, I can see clearly the chassis feels durable in some points, but I need to say the lid cover is slightly weak especially when you put some amount of power on it. The base area itself feels great and the flex is not coming during the typing. I guess the build quality is comparable with MSI’s budget gaming in the same price point here. I won’t give any complaint toward this matter considering on how cheap the price is.

Connectivity and Maintenance

Dell G3 17 3 The connectivity is an important aspect as you often plug your gaming accessories, so make sure to consider of this important matter. Here, the manufacture provides of well completely connectivity included of two USB 3.0 standard ports, a single USB 2.0, and a USB type-C port. There is a Thunderbolt 3 port, but only available in higher end model. Then, we also have of 3.5 mm audio jack, HDMI, Ethernet, and display port 1.2 port. There is no problem at all toward this case and I really see Dell takes this matter as pretty easily after seeing how well managed the connectivity here.

For this review, I only get the base model equipped with 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD. I don’t see of SSD storage and for this case I decide to open its entire back cover for finding an upgrade possibility here. Inside, there is not much space left but I can still find of a single free RAM slot and M.2 free slot which means adding of SSD is totally possible here. The 1TB storage is pretty big, but the speed is very slow especially on the booting process as it could take couple of minutes to do. Adding of 128GB SSD should more than sufficient here.

Gaming Performance

The hardware configuration in the base model is brand new and considered as relatively powerful. The Intel I5 8300H is a quad core processor with base clock speed at 2.3 GHz and coming alongside 45 watts TDP power consumption. The processor is comparable with I7 7700HQ from 7th generation in matter of performance, and I clearly find a great improvement in performance here. For gaming, this processor is good enough but I recommend you to take the I7 model if you want to render video or doing some works which need a faster and more cores CPU here. Just make sure to put your consideration here.

At last, let’s check about of its gaming aspect. The GTX 1050 is now probably the lowest end graphic card NVIDIA has right now after they recently announced the RTX 20 series card. Despite its being of a low end card now, the performance from this GPU is not that simple. For a test, I have tried some newer games like Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and Assassin Creed Odyssey and both of run in very acceptable performance with medium setting. It gets of up to 40 FPS for the Assassin and more than 60 FPS for the Call of Duty. Similar games will offer pretty much identical performance while some older games should offer better result.

Final Thought

As long as you are fine with its poor design approach and having spending some bucks for adding of an SSD, the Dell G3 17 is a perfect option for any kinds of users who want to do some gaming in budget. I never find something so surprising about this laptop, but its package is designed greatly by offering great performance while keeping the balance between its prices. Unfortunately, the design is sacrificed at this point and making it looks pretty standard. Like I said before, everything should be fine as long as you are okay with this matter. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it. Mind leaves some comments below for further assistance regarding the article.
