The ASUS ROG Strix GL704GM is finally released and now being the companion for the ROG GL504 15 which is the 15 inch model of it. This laptop is actually a direct success for the GL703 from the 2017 and now coming with branded new design, more powerful hardware, and better screen. ASUS almost designs everything with much thinner chassis, bezel-less display, and more sturdy durability. Thankfully, with that kind of changes, they decide to keep the price point in similar level. Pricing is something important for a product and they don’t go crazy about it. For anyone looks for a replacement for their old device, this could be a good option for you.
As for the hardware configuration, it’s started with Intel I7 8750H processor from 8th generation, 1060 graphic card, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD. There are numerous various configurations available included the different graphic card if you want depending on your budget. For this time, I am getting the very basic level as the testing unit. Let’s take a look inside at it further and see how it works on us. That is what we are going to talk about here. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Design and Connectivity
If you take a look into its design much further, then you should be very familiar with its approach because ASUS takes their main inspiration from the ROG Zepyrus S. We can easily this system as the cheaper model for it. Despite being called as the rip off for its premium model, the chassis itself looks and feels great. The entire chassis is built from aluminum with great matte and red finishing. The build quality is impressive although I still find some its competitors have better build quality. The lid cover feels durable, but the keyboard warps easily during some cases especially when you put some amount of power into it. Not a big problem, but worth mentioning here.
In term of look, edges and corners look pretty premium and making it feels like a premium machine at all. The bezel surrounded the screen is incredibly thin and feels modern. Unfortunately, it makes a big impact to its webcam placement. Yeah, they must put the webcam at the bottom since the 7 mm thickness bezel is smaller enough. This case is very normal as the Dell XPS 15 suffers the same problem for a long time. It’s just uncommon to see it coming in 17 inch gaming machine. As for the connectivity, we have of USB type-C port and some standard USB 3.0 ports. Sadly, no Thunderbolt 3 port is included for some reasons.back to menu ↑
Display and Input
ASUS puts not so impressive of IPS panel, but still looks incredible as long as you put your expectation is quite low. The 17 screen features of an IPS panel and comes with standard 1080p resolution. In 2018, 60 Hz refresh screen is almost no longer used and many manufactures swap it with high refresh rate 144 Hz screen included of ASUS. The screen runs pretty smooth especially with G-Sync activated it here. In term of quality, the panel manages to produce of 88 % SRGB color and getting of 314 nits of brightness. For under 2000 dollars, they put the best panel that possible for them to add here.
As for the input, I think the keyboard feels much better compared to the Zephyrus where it has a very weird keys layout. Here, the keyboard comes with standard layout and 1.7 mm key travel. The keys are well sized thanks to its bigger dimension. The keys feedbacks are nice and it sounds quite during the fast typing. I personally just don’t like the numpad area keys because it appears in smaller size than the QWERTY keys. This is the only complaint so far I have about it.

Performance and Gaming
You should not worry about its performance because both of CPU and GPU can really satisfy you in both of working and gaming. The I7 8750H processor has six cores CPU worked at 2.2 GHz base clock and can easily reached higher clock with boosted support when its needed. This processor works great if you want to render video, editing photo, or doing some activities that need more cores CPU in order to get done the process faster. In gaming it does not help much for gaining more performance and only makes a little impact in overall FPS getting in games. The CPU then combined with 16GB RAM and the SSD storage which allows you to save dozen of things and having multi-tasking in good way.
Moving into the gaming experience, the GTX 1060 will let you run any games without any problem included some VR games available in Steam right now. I have started my test with Fortnite and I am able to set the game into high setting and having of more than 100 FPS. The result is incredible and runs pretty smooth here. The Call of Duty Black Ops 4 shows a similar result with 60 to 80 FPS during the game Battle Royale mode. I think the result is sufficient enough here, but I recommend you to see its 1070 variant if you prefer of more performance here.back to menu ↑
The Strix Scar II GL704GM does not only look good in matter of design, but also coming with very powerful hardware specification to depend. The only great competitor it has right now is basically the Alienware 17 R5 which features similar price and specification. Acer also has of Predator 500 17 inch, but its appeared in cheaper price and lower quality design. I guess this is the only option you have so far if you want a gaming laptop with good design and powerful specs to afford in 2018. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it. Thank you very much for reading the article and mind leaving some comments for further assistance regarding the article.
