GPD name is suddenly becoming so popular after they release of their Windows Gaming portable devices. Although these devices don’t come with pretty high end specification, it still allows of users to run a full scale Windows games in portable way. The portability is partly one of the reasons why it becomes so popular among the consumers. Several months after the released, they announce another their handle system and this time is using of an Android as the main operating system. The GPD XD Plus 7 costs for under 300 dollars and coming with decent specification. The price point is much cheaper compared to GPD Pocket 2, but having the limited games support as the trade-off here.
I have checked the unit for couple of weeks and have a time to share with you guys. I kind love its joystick controller and buttons where I can just playing games without using the touchscreen control. Some MOBA games and even PUBG work very well with this control. The only thing you might consider here is the performance. It uses of an old Mediatek processor and really holds its maximum potential for getting better. Let’s take a look inside and see how it works on us. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Case and Looks
Forget about the aluminum chassis in the GPD Win 2 because they totally swap the material with plastic here. The entire chassis is built from plastic and finished with matte black finishing. The build quality is decent, but I should be surprised if it can hold of couple of drops without breaking the hardware inside. I have tried to drop it once from my dining table and it leaves a bad mark into the chassis. For this case, we have no choice than to be very careful because I cannot find any extra accessories for protecting the case. Thankfully, the build in the buttons controller is much better. The keys are clicky and feel comfortable to press.
In term of features, it has of everything like any smartphone has included the micro SD slot and SIM network features. I personally love the SIM network features here because I can just simple play games while replaying the SMS or receiving the call from my friends. I just wish they give us USB type-C port because the charging process is still done through micro USB port. It’s necessary to carry more than one USB cable because it uses a different port connection than your smartphone.back to menu ↑
Display and Input
The 5 inch display features of a 5 inch IPS panel with 1280 x 720 resolution. I don’t see the point where they would add of 1080p panel for some time later, but the current display looks great here without any issue. The color accuracy is quite accurate and the viewing angle is also relatively impressive even in low brightness setting. Having of 720p or 1080p resolution in 5 inch screen panel is not giving of big difference at all because it’s hard to see the different unless you really take a look at it closely. I have no complaint at all toward this matter especially considering on how cheap the price here.
As for the input, you are offered with two different styles input methods. The first one is by using the touchscreen for navigating through the system and playing games and secondly is by using the controller for doing the same thing. Here, I personally want to put a stress into its physical buttons. In real life usage these buttons work greatly in gaming, but keep in mind sometimes you need to remap their buttons during some cases. The process is done through the processor which pre-installed into the operating system here.

Hardware and Software
The Mediatek MT8167 processor is featured here alongside with 4GB RAM and 32GB EMMC storage. This processor itself is quite powerful despite of its ages. It’s released in 2016 and featuring of quad core CPU inside. There are two Cortex A72 and other two Cortex A53 CPU work at the clock up to 2.4 GHz. I manage to run of some newer games and the result is not disappointing. Vain Glory is running greatly with the high setting while the well-known PUBG Mobile only playable at the medium and low setting. In my opinion, we really demand of hardware improvement here and they can at least put of Helio X20 processor here.
The Android 7.0 is running in the XD Plus 2018 inch model. The manufacture interestingly has pre-installed with it some emulators and games included like the PPPSSPP, SNES, NES, GBA, and even Sega Dreamcast emulators. Keep in mind, some of these apps running the older version of it and you might see some games run badly unless you upgrade the apps with the newer version. I see of people complaining about this case, so make sure to get everything upgraded as soon as you have it for the first time. This case could be troublesome, but does not take much time to upgrade everything.back to menu ↑
The GPD XD Plus is not a device made for everyone because not all of users want to spend for more than 200 dollars for getting it because they can just buy a good smartphone with the same amount of money. You can just run the games and games through your smartphone because they run the same typical software here. The only consideration worthy here is the joystick controller feature which works incredibly great in gaming. I recommend you to check it further and see how it works on you. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it. Thank you very much for reading the article and mind leaving some comments for further assistance regarding the article.
