Dell finally brings of Intel Coffee Lake CPU into its business mid-range laptops. The Latitude 5491 is the first model to equip with Intel Hexa Core 45 Watts battery at this point and its performance is pretty promising. For this couple of years, they have used to put of ULV 15 watts of processor which can promise of long last battery life, but the performance is not dependable as you think especially for demanding usage like video rendering and editing. This is way the 5491 can be a good solution for users looking for a more portable device, but having great performance inside.
The price is probably the biggest consideration you have to think about here. They put the price for nearly 2000 dollars for the higher end model and you probably manage to buy a gaming laptop with similar specs and even better at the same price. I also have of Toshiba Tecra X40 and Lenovo Thinkpad T480 as an alternative although both of these laptops cannot be compared in term of performance. Let’s take a look at it further and see how it works on us. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Case and Looks
Nothing feels distinguish in term of design and build quality and I even see that the weight is slightly bigger and the chassis is slightly thicker at this case. Well, Dell puts of 45 watts battery and its pretty normal for them to make it thicker for ensuring the thermal issue is not persisted. As the comparison, I have of HP Elitebook 840 G5 which coming with similar chassis dimension, but having less weight to have here. The overall design still promises the similar experience considering Dell does not put much effort for revamping the design approach here. Some users should love of this decision while some of them could be bored with this decision.
The build quality and connectivity are decent. The chassis is well spaced and having good empty space to depend them for putting decent connectivity. Here, we have of display port support, USB type-C port, and even Thunderbolt 3 support for the higher end model. The base and high end models feature quite difference connectivity, but both of these devices are coming with similar footprint and identical build. The overall impression is promising although you might have different thought about it.back to menu ↑
Hardware Configuration and Maintenance
The hardware configuration is pretty much limited to CPU option and Dell has no option to pick different GPU option for some reasons. Here, the base model will cost you for under 1500 dollars and its coming with Intel I5 8400H processor 130MX graphic card. The higher end model will cost you more, but having more performance inside. The Intel I7 8850H is featured at this point and will promise you a better multi-tasking experience thanks to its 6 cores CPU. Unfortunately, it costs for nearly 2000 dollars and have you think twice for having it.
As for the hardware maintenance, the upgradability is still becoming the biggest selling point to expect here. While it does not come with maintenance hatch and forced you to open the entire back cover for getting inside, the upgradability option is decent. You have a chance to upgrade the SSD or replacing the storage with much bigger one. I am impressed to see the space inside is decent considering we see a 14 inch laptop here. This case can be a good selling point if you have a plan to buy the smallest variant and having an upgrade for later when you need it.

Performance and Battery
The performance is as impressive as the hardware included inside. The Intel I7 8850H now features of 6 cores CPU clocked at 2.6 GHz. Its CPU clock this time is slightly slower compared to 7th generation series, but the performance in multi task thread is decent considering the number of CPU is increased this time. This is a good reason for affording the 8th generation CPU especially for the users that need demanded CPU to depend on for multi-tasking work. The 130MX graphic card at the same point won’t promise you the exact performance like GTX 10 series, but should handle FPS and E-Sport games in relatively good performance.
The chassis is much thicker and it’s not very appropriate for Dell not to include bigger capacity battery, but the keep in mind the 68 Wh battery is remaining unchanged for some reasons. Thankfully, the battery life is decent and should last up to 9 hours and 50 minutes during of daily usage. More demanding usage like gaming will offer you less battery for around 6 hours, but this duration is considered as good enough for maximizing your productivity without sacrificing your portability.
The Latitude 5491 14 inch is impressive in performance thanks to its Coffee Lake based processor and its discrete graphic card. While the design is remaining similar like the old generation, but users can expect of improvement in power for more demanding usage. Unfortunately, not all of users are in need for this case especially for the one that just deal with work like editing document and browsing. That is why, make sure to consider of everything before you decide to have it. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it. Thank you very much for reading the article and see you again next time.
