Best Windows 8 Laptop June 2018

Windows operating system is considered as one of the best option right now because it is using by millions of people which leading the developers to push their dozens of app support. For this reason, I think its normal Microsoft to improve this operating system considering on how good it performs on the market. We have seen so critics toward this OS on the Windows Vista, but they seem to fix most of majority issues and critics from users on Windows 7 version. Few years after the release of this operating system, the company finally introduced of its successor that later they called as Windows 8. This version for most people is surprising and frustating because there are so many chances were made and Microsoft seems go toward something different approach. Few chances are made like the missing of start menu which is weird as it’s already becoming the icon for the system. It looks like Microsoft want users to see the system not just as workstation, but worked as an entertainment place that dominated by iPad and Android tablets. Even with some problems that it brings, Windows 8 is still considered as great OS for people who want try to how good the system is in touchscreeen and tablet mode.

If you are looking forward to buying a new laptop, it is always a good idea for you to afford the best Windows 8 laptop. Why Windows 8? The radical changes that Windows 8 introduces indeed disorient many long time Windows users and even cause public uproar; however, changes like the introduction of charm bar and the replacement of start menu with start screen at the time of Windows 8 release are considered necessary because Microsoft needs a groundbreaking operating system that bridges the gap between tablets and laptops . The best Windows 8 laptop for this case needs to be powerful because it must carry the appropriate power in order to run the exact application we want. The design and how thin the chassis is also important because Windows 8 laptop is expected to be more modern and featuring ultraportable laptop. A touchscreen is recommended here, although not a must, because Windows 8 is a touch-friendly operating system that is still convenient to work by using a touchpad or mouse. Based on those criteria, some of the best Windows 8 laptops that you can find at the market are to be reviewed below.

Samsung Notebook 9 15” NP900X5T

Notebook 9
Samsung Notebook 9 is considered as one of the most underrated laptops that available in the market right now. The device itself is coming from such a big company that really well known for years on making of great product. I do not really know the reason why it gets so unpopular. Both of design and specifications is top notch for the price. Samsung for few years has made of great display and they bring of their quality here. The 1920 x 1080 screen looks so good in 15 inch panel. It produces huge amount of colors and delivering of clear and crisp images to any content we see. The brightness is totally bright and won’t force to adjust the brightness into the maximum for outdoor usage. I think they really have done well job on this case.

Move to the inside, there is a full size keyboard that once again is offering of fantastic impression. The keyboard for some reasons feels shallow, but still giving nice away for typing. The entire keys are tactile and do not require much power to press it. I really love its clicky sounds when we put our finger on top of it. I could easily type for more than 85 words per minute in such a decent way. The backlit support is back and pretty much usable for typing in darker environment. Another worth thing to mention from is the security. There is a fingerprint reader that placed near the touchpad that fully supported by Windows Halo. It allows you to open the lockscreen without needed to enter any password. This method is better than any traditional method as the specific data saved here is specific to our Id. With its design, hardware, and decent price, I think this product is worth to mention as the top choice right now.

ASUS Zenbook UX330UA-AH55

Zenbook UX330UA 2
The Zenbook UX330UA is easily becoming of my favorite here as it brings of values around to its price. The machine is coming with such decent specs into such a sleek and slim aluminum chassis. The chassis itself is light, but also durable. The build quality is impressive and I think this thing is not something that would easily break without any reason. For giving more premium touch to the body, ASUS later finished with silver finishing to all over the body. The thin bezel surrounded the bezel is featured with 1080p display that looks vibrant and solid. On my test, it produces of 106 percent of SRGB color which is decent for the price. Many rigs I found on similar price are having worst screen than this one. ASUS never really plays with their quality and this point is totally shown here.

Difference to its predecessor, this new version is getting huge of leap in term of performance. The Intel 8th I5 8520U processor is zippy and offering more performance. The dual core setup is no longer used and then replaced with quad core setup that basically gives us 60 percent more performance than Sky Lake series. I think Intel really listen to our critics as the previous version really has no difference in term of power. This amazing chipset then combined with 8GB RAM that should allow you to do multitasking without any issue. I have tried to open dozen of tabs on Chrome and it’s still running without any issue. The impressive thing is not just stopped there, the battery is probably one of the biggest selling point offered here. The battery could last up to 13 hours in single charge with normal usage. The difference is significant here as it brings 1.5 hours battery than its last version. With its zippy performance, colorful design, and vivid display, I think it’s hard not to get tempted by this device.

Lenovo Miix 520

Lenovo Miix 520
Detachable laptop becomes more and more popular nowadays as it offers better versatility and portability to the users. People can just detach its screen from the keyboard dock and use it similarly like holding of the tablet. The most popular machine we have right now is Microsoft Surface Book 2, but sadly this product is considered as expensive and not all of users want to spend more than 1000 dollars for getting it. Lenovo is once again live up to our expectation with Miix 520. It features of nice and catchy design that looks satisfying. The total weight for its chassis is only around 1.2 pounds with dimension in such a small and thin chassis. It feels like I am just holding a tablet and not a laptop. I love its portability as I can just throw it into my mini bag.

For supporting our productivity, the system is equipped with Intel Core I5 processor alongside with 8GB RAM. These specs are more than enough for any light and medium tasks. I tried to run of Photoshop for a while and not finding any issue. The temperature goes high pretty easily here as the system is completely fan-less, but it never goes beyond unacceptable level and really never bothers our experience. As for the storage, it has 256GB storage and sadly this SSD I think it’s not upgradable as opening its shell is hard to do. This is not a big issue as 256GB is big enough for storing anything. The only bad thing to say from it is the battery life that can be better. Surfing over the internet while connecting to WIFI nonstop would give it total time for around 9 hours and this result should be better with some tweaks and different usages. Well, this product seems to be nice alternative for Surface Book 2.

Acer Aspire E 15 E5-576G-57D4

Aspire E 15
The Aspire E 15 series is promising of high end hardware or specs for its budget prices. Its last version was received so many praises by people especially for gamers because its impressive hardware and now they are back again with new version. This new version is even better, but with similar price for under 800 dollars. The new series rocks of Intel Core I5 8th gen processor which is brand new processor and not all of companies want to put it on their products because it’s still pricy right now. Here, ASUS is crazy enough to put it here and even more impressive that I later I found it’s combined with NVIDIA 150MX. This GPU is not the best one outside there, but still offering decent way for video and photo editing and doing some gaming.

Acer needs to make some sacrifices on design to make everything work. The chassis itself featured of plastic printed lid with black shiny finishing on its entire outer shell. It lacks of detail and there is only the company logo placed at center of lid. The chassis weight measured at 15 x 10.2 x 1.2 inches with weight for 4.9 pounds. The 4.9 pounds is not that light for standard right now, but remember that it has DVD drive for some reasons. Well, DVD drive on notebook is not really popular right now, but might be a decent feature for users that love to put their movies here. The build quality is top notch although made from plastic. The port connectivity is well complete with standard ports and USB type-C port mixed together. If you prefer to have performance rather than nice looking design, then this machine should made for you. There is a price for its decent performance.

ASUS Vivobook F510UA

The Vivook F501UA is basically the cheapest business devices that you can afford from ASUS right now. The company looks wants to bring what they do on Zenbook premium series, but in much cheaper price. You might think this one as another common 15 inch notebook, but the case is not true here. The F510U features of slim and modern design that built in from aluminum. Well, you are not going to find any similar product with aluminum design at this price range. The design is impressive as they successfully fit of 15 inch panel into such a sleek and slim 14 inch bezel. This narrow bezel is so thin and what see here is only the content from the display and say goodbye to the annoying and thick black bezel.

The look is impressive, then what about the performance? You should not to have any worry as it features similar hardware like we found on new Acer Aspire 15. It’s equipped with Intel I5 8250U alongside with NVIDIA 940MX. It has the same processor with only difference in GPU. The 940MX is quite lower than 150MX, but this thing is pretty normal as this device has lower price. Trust me, you can still expect to run any majority of applications with no issue. I have it for couple months for now and I really love its performance. Moreover, the 15 inch screen is bright, crisp and delivers truly amazing experience to the users. The 1TB HDD storage is quite slow, so I recommend you to swap it with faster HDD or even adding SSD as it has built in M2 SATA 3 slot. Adding better storage will give performance boosted. Better to take look into this one and then see how it works on you.

Microsoft Surface Book 2 13 Inch

Surface Book 2
It turns out that Surface Book 2 is probably one of the best 2 in 1 systems to afford right now. The device is just slightly bigger than Surface Pro, but it’s allowing you to do much better things here. With its more expensive price tag, it brings of significant improvement in term of performance. The Intel I5 processor is not that difference here, but you have to take look into its keyboard dock. Its docking is not just a place for its keyboard, but on the inside it fits of NVIDIA GTX 1050. Using it on tablet mode, the users will be promised with Intel HD GPU and once they the screen into the keyboard, the GPU is swapped with much powerful one. I cannot believe they were able to fit as much as powerful of this graphic card into such a slim and thin chassis.

This hybrid machine is available in few different options included two different screen sizes selection. There is the 13 inch and 15 inch one that basically promising similar thing. The only difference is located on the display size and GPU on the inside. The 13 inch one has NVIDIA 1050 while the 15 inch one features NVIDIA 1060. Here, I prefer you have the 13 inch version as it gives you better portability and productivity. I really have no bad thing to say from it as everything looks great. The display is great with 3000 x 2000 resolution, the performance is wise, and even the battery life is impressive. My only complaint is the lack of accessories included on the package. There are no extra adapters for the USB type-C or stylus pen available on its packaging. As the result, we need to buy it separated for later.

HP Stream 14 Affordable Students Laptop

HP Stream Blue
If you are looking for a decent laptop right now, then there is huge chance you would find that HP Stream 14 is taking your eyes. The rig is available for under 300 dollars and coming with candy colored design and decent hardware. The company has been making of low budget devices for many years and specifically target of students and low budget users. You are going to find many similar choices here, but remember most of them are Chromebook and not Windows based machine. Many people seem not that interested into Chromebook as its lack of software support and this case lead HP to provide of better choices to their consumers. The Stream series is featuring many similar things like its previous version with only difference on screen size that now bigger.

The performance is not having any difference here, the Intel Celeron N4000 and 4GB RAM are equipped to power the operating system. Having of this hardware is not something that bad as its capable of running any basic apps like Chrome and Microsoft Office without any slowing down or stuttering. The 4GB RAM is the key here that makes performance is so stable. To make students interested to get into this machine, HP packed the Windows OS with Office 365 subscription for one year free from any charge. This Microsoft Office version offers more features like cloud saving were users can edit their document anytime and anywhere on different systems. There dozens of features included here and really worth to try. The only thing I want to stress here is the storage. The system only features of 64GB storage which is not upgradable. The only way to add more storage is by adding micro SD to the slot. Luckily, Micro SD is not really expensive right now and most people have it on their smartphones.

ASUS ROG Strix Scar GL703GM

ASUS ROG Strix Scar GL703GE
The Strix GL702GM is a perfect choice for gamers searching for power, but without breaking their bank. The rig is equipped with high end hardware components that were built in such a light and thin chassis. The build quality is impressive and not far on other ROG products. I just found some flex when I press its base. The flex is only happen when I press the base intentionally with some pressures and not becoming a big problem during normal usage. I though with its portable design, the connectivity is going to be an issue here. But, the thing is not true here as the port connectivity is well complete. I am glad to see of Thunderbolt 3 ports that allowing 30Gbps bandwidth. There are also some standard USB ports that placed nicely and well-spaced.

As for gaming, I think you will never find any issue. The Intel Core I7 8750H and NVIDIA GTX 1060 are something to have here. I specifically want to put stress on its GPU here. The GTX 1060 is capable of running any games and VR games in stable performance. There is no need to make any adjustment on setting as the graphic card is a power horse. The system often breaks up to FPS on many games that I tested. I have tried few games like Overwatch and Fortnite and both of run like a breeze. On maximum setting on 1080p the performance is so stable up to 60 FPS during multiplayer campaign. Fortnite is quite demanding games as there are so many people play at the same map. While gaming, the system could get hot pretty easily, bit it would cool back down instantly by adjusting its clock speed. I did notice it couple of times, but never bother its performance. This is a pretty great machine for playing games at high setting that will never break your pocket.

I am going to put another ROG gaming machine here for in case you need another recommendation. The Strix GL702ZC is appeared to be difference than most of other series we have seen right now. The most interesting to see here is on its CPU and GPU. Both of them are coming from AMD and I think you can easily guess what it is. On the inside there are AMD Ryzen 7 1700 which features of 8 cores cluster that combined with Radeon RX580. This is a huge deal for its prize that only available for under 1500 dollars. ASUS and AMD were successfully of fitting of a full pledge desktop CPU into a thin and light package. I do not really know how they make it possible, but I guess we soon see more companies are trying to do the same thing.

In term performance, both of CPU and GPU are beast. The Ryzen 7 scores of point around 2500 thousands almost score twice than Intel Core I7 770HQ. The 8 cores cluster is really helpful on taking multitasking work like video editing and rendering. For this kind of activities, I think this CPU is on far with Intel as more cores are more helpful here. If you expect to do photo editing or video rendering on laptop, then this one is really made for you. As for the GPU itself, the Radeon RX580 performance is comparable with GTX 1060. The graphic card should run any games included of VR games. The only think I want you to think about here is the heat. The temperature is becoming an issue right now and I think this is only matter of time for ASUS to fix it.

HP Spectre X360 15 Inch Version

Spectre X360 2
The Spectre X360 is a 15 inch convertible machine that every users dream for. The elegant chassis is created from CNC aluminum design that covered with premium black finishing. The design is not the only selling point here because the specs on the inside are pretty overwhelming. The 8th gen Intel I7 processor is super powerful thanks to new revamped design from Intel. The chipset could produce more power, but still with lower power consumption. It’s really making impact on the battery life that now has 1.5 to 2 hours more battery usage. On top of that, the convertible design allows you to transform it into multiple modes included of traditional, tent, and tablet mode that has their own usability. The tent mode itself is useful for browsing to the internet while the tent mode is working nicely on business presentation.

When you open the lid, you soon see a nice keyboard sits nicely on the inside. The Spectre’s keyboard is comfortable and promising of great feedback. The keys are tactile and let my hands move naturally as soon as place my fingers on top of it. On top of keyboard, there is a 15 inch screen that gives similar impression. I do not have any problem on image quality, but I found that the brightness is quite dim for some reasons. I think they do it intentionally for saving the battery life and that is might be the reason. The battery life would give you total of usage for up to 10 hours in any normal circumstance. Put it on stress level will drop the battery time to around 9 hours. Still, the Spectre X360 is one of the best devices to afford right despite of some issues to find here.

Final Thought

After reading this review, you should really know that Windows 8 is suitable for all kinds of laptops, regardless of the way they are primarily used by users depending on their needs. It could be found not only in 2-in-1 laptops, but also in more traditional laptops, which are proven to work great with this operating system.

As a ‘transitional’ operating system, Windows 8 indeed requires the users to have some adjustments and to struggle when they start using the way to operate the system. If you experience such struggle, you should try to enjoy it because as time goes by, your Windows 8 laptop will be the best laptop that is quite convenient to use.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
