ASUS TUF FX504 is a pretty decent gaming machine to afford for under 1000 dollars. First, it gets nice design which is mostly typical ASUS usually brings to us. The design itself is quite nice especially when you consider the look as your top priority. The entire body is created from plastic that later finished by black finishing. The futuristic look is somehow considered as plain, but yet premium in my opinion. The build quality is also nice and means you are not going to break it easily. Opening the lid, you would be welcomed by full size keyboard that is supported by backlit. The keys feature 17 mm key travel and delivering a fast and accurate ways for typing on your gameplay. The keyboard is what you are looking for a true gaming machine.

If you take a look at it closely, you will notice that the notebook comes with Harman audio speakers. They said the speakers are specifically tuned with premium audio, but in my test the quality itself is very mediocore. The power is great, but the detail itself is not that great. I guess you should not expect much from it. In term of performance, I guess you should not so worry because the combination between GTX 1050 and Intel I5 8300H are nice combinations. Playing newer games in medium or sometimes high setting are possible. Mass Effect Andromeda is playable at medium setting with framerate below 30 FPS all the time with only few drops on rarely occasional cases. Any other games like Overwatch or CS GO will run like a breeze as the system requirement is not great in comparable with the game I tested before. Just give a chance for it and prepare to be surprised with the quality.

HP Omen 15 Gaming

HP Omen 15 2018
HP Omen 15 was redesigned and improved by new chassis and nice clicky responsive keyboard. The device is improved a lot in comparable with previous model. The company was working really hard to make the product appeal to everyone. The design is similar to what you get on the Dell Alienware and means there are so many things to expect from it. The base panel is also easy to be removed and adding more storage or RAM to the notebook is easier to do. This is good news by anyone who loves to make the upgrade. The package itself is half made from carbon and plastic that combined greatly. The price might be cheap, but it’s not making the look is bad. People have to take note that we would get all of these things for only under 1000 dollars.

One thing that worth to mention here is the display, the display is colorful and the brightness is acceptable and makes me easier to use it outdoor. It produces great color productions and watching the new Batman cartoon offering complete details in every moment. As for the keyboard, here people should get mixed result since the keyboard is too shallow. For anyone who gets used with it, they will love it, but it goes difference when people already used with normal keyboard. The keys are responsive and clicky, and should be dependable for communicate with your teammate with ease. For gaming, you are powered by NVIDIA GTX 1050 and Intel I7 processor. The power of GTX 1050 TI is far below from GTX 1060, but everything is very playable if only VR game is not important for you. The battery goes down from 100 to 0 in 10 hours for browsing and editing documents, but we will get 6 hours and 25 minutes for playing games without any break.

Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK

Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK
Acer has been known as the company that brave enough in providing high quality notebook in such an affordable price. Now they are back again with Acer Predator Helios 300 that somehow makes this price range becoming really hot because of it. Many of its competitors only provide GTX 1050 GPU as their main processing power, but here we get NVIDIA GTX 1060 that far better in term of performance and power consumption and even capable of running VR games. Yeah, playing VR games are possible if you have HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. You might have to reduce the setting or resolution to the HD, but the overall experience is nice. When i unboxed it for the first time, I did notice the screen is quite dim even it uses IPS panel. The brightness is mediocore, but luckily the same thing is not happened to the color quality.

To see how much difference, I did few test on this GPU and the result is quite surprising me. Rise of the Tomb Raider is running at high setting while Battlefield 1 is completely enjoyable at high setting in multiplayer mode. Battlefield 1 is considered as heavy game especially in multiplayer where we get more than 3 players at the same time. The CPU and GPU keep the performance stable for many hours without any heating or throttling. I think the fan do their work wonderfully to make it happen. The temperature never goes below 80 degrees on gaming and will be cooler when you only stream Youtube or just finishing your research paper. I believe this maybe your best luck for performance, if you want to sacrifice few things on it. I leave the link below for you to check it later.

MSI GL63 8RC 069

MSI GL63 067 8RD
MSI GL63M 7REX has just newly introduced by the company and categorized as lower model or standard model from their line ups. Even though they said it as standard version, everything is much similar like we find on their high end models with only few sacrifices and loses. GTX 1050 is up to date and modern, but not powerful enough for 4K gaming and VR. I usually plug the laptop into my 4K monitor, but that thing is not possible here. Then, you soon notice the RAM is 8GB and not 12, or even 16GB. Opening the back cover or base is done easier and you just need to plug the upgradable part and the problem is solved. These specifications are more than enough especially when we consider the price and the big name from MSI in the PC market.

Let’s talk about other good things about it. In term of design, I think we should be happy because the package now is slimmer and more portable than the GL62M. The package is stylish and bringing it around would never make you shame at all. The dimension is measured at 15.1 x 10.2 x 1.1 inches with total weight for around 5.3 pounds. Bringing or throwing it to your backpack is easy and carrying it around is not very weight at least in compare with my old gaming notebook. For the storage, the hybrid storage setup is provided. For the system it uses 256GB SSD for faster booting and faster in opening and closing games. As for saving games, we are freely to put 1TB even more storage for saving dozens of games. Having HHD is recommended as the games right now are big. GTA 5 itself is already around 50 GB while other games like Resident Evil 7 or Assassin Creed Origin having almost the same sizes.

ASUS Vivobook K570UD

ASUS Vivobook K570UD
ASUS Vivobook K570UD is not really should be called as a gaming machine since the design itself is pretty much different, but somehow premium. The look is taken from their Zenbook series and it does features great overall look. The device is not only usable for playing games, but also worked as multimedia and supporting your productivity. The Intel Core I5 8250U and GTX 1050 are offering fast and smooth performance on opening applications. I did Photoshop and have not found any lag or delay on the process editing. It runs high demands games or applications at the same time without any issue. The screen produces 100 percent of SRGB color, but sadly they still use the TN panel and not IPS. The color production is not top notch and the only issue here is the viewing angles.

The system has some issue on handling the heat. The touchpad and center can be pretty hot, but still usable even after 5 or 6 hours usage. The main problem for the temperature is might because of the design. The body itself is measured at 0.8 x 15 x 10 inches and appeared to be similar like Macbook Pro or Dell XPS 15. Just make sure to give it break for few minutes after doing heavy tasks. On the under the base, ASUS equip it with double speakers. The speakers fire loud and clear sounds and easily fill any small room. The equalizer is here to find if you want to play little with the manual setting. At last, as the way to connect it to the display, it offers us USB-C cable that fully compatible for connecting it to the 4K monitor. With its current price, I guess I do not have anything to complain about it.

Dell Inspiron I7577 5241BLK PUS

Dell Inspiron I7577 5241BLK PUS
Dell Inspiron I7577 is cheap, but never ever compromise of its power. The laptop is coming late in the 2017 and has improved lots for both of design and performance. If the look is not your point here, I think you are not having any problem. The design itself is plain and maybe too simple. The surface is finished with black matte finishing making it more appealing, but sadly the thing is not working and the device feels like a budget notebook. Just never expect such a good thing or you will be disappointed. But, I am telling you that you are going to be happy with the performance as the thing packed on the inside is beast. You never find the similar thing in other competitors with the same price.

As the main processing power, they built it alongside Intel 7th Core I5 and 8GB RAM. It does perform nicely for multi-tasking work with minimal lag during the usage. Then, the hardware is also featured NVIDIA 1060 GPU that amazingly works well with the Core I5. The performance I received is satisfying where most of games are playing at mostly 60 FPS all the time. No throttling or heating as I tested it for 6 hours nonstop. One thing that I hate here is the battery life which for me is worst. It’s draining out in 5 hours with minimal setting and really hopes it goes better. Reducing the screen brightness helps the battery little bit, but not helping much. I always connect it to the wall charger all the time, but just never do it often as it would break the battery easily. If you are in limited budget, then I could not recommend better thing than it.

Acer Aspire E 15 2018

Aspire E 15
Acer Aspire E 15 is available in not more than 600 dollars, but this should be my top recommendation if the users really want a gaming machine with very limited budget. With that price, you get NVIDIA 940X which is basically an integrated GPU like we similarly find on the AMD chipset. The performance is far from 1050 or 1060, but keeps in mind that it’s still twice better than Intel Integrated Card. The GPU itself is mostly usable for playing E-sport or competitive games like CS Go, Overwatch, or Call of Duty. If the setting is set at low with HD resolution, reaching 60 FPS is possible like I did on Overwatch. The game plays around 55 to 60 FPS and the framerate will never get below of it. The multiplayer mode is truly playable. The thing goes differently when I tested the AAA games. Rise of the Tomb Raider is surprisingly running well on low setting with HD resolution. I set all of the things off and it reaches 37 FPS.

For multi-tasking it has 8GB RAM which is totally okay, but I was happing a problem on the storage. 256GB is too small and only fits few games. The thing I do is upgrade the part where opening the base is easy to do. Even the person who is not familiar with tech is able to do it easily. I recommend giving it 512 or 256 GB SSD and we will never to worry of running out storage anymore. I believe people will save much money from buying this one as the price is cheap. Give it a chance and see how it performs well in your opinion. Just bring it home when you think it as okay.

Acer Nitro 5 AN515

Nitro 5 2
Acer Nitro 5 is another affordable option from this company. As soon as you notice it closely, the product is similar like ROG Strix in term of design. It’s entirely designed from plastic and colorful highlight details on the entire surface. The lid is covered with brushed metal finishing and combining along red shade colors that continue from the exterior to the interior. Nitro 5 is only slighter and thicker than ROG Strix, but not a big problem since we mostly use it in indoor and not for outdoor usage. The keyboard is not great and only usable for gaming, but for typing the distant between keys are too far and I am not able to reach the keys easily on my fingers. I guess this is where the price is talking to the consumers.

The 1080p screen produces detail and colorful images in every situation. The 15.6 screen is large and seeing all our teammates are much and much easier than before. One thing I notice here is the refresh rate that appeared quite high. People will not notice it easily, but any hardcore gamer could notice it. Far from this problem, I enjoy the Nitro 5 quite a lot where I tested it for 3 weeks. And for anyone who is asking for battery life, it performs mostly for playing games in maximum 6 hours. The result is always similar in few tests. The charging process is finished in 3 or 4 hours and we might use it as the break time. I recommend you to check it further as we have our different opinion toward something. The link below is going to take you there.

MSI wants to prove that 17 inch gaming notebook could be successful on the market. Most of all products right now are coming with 15.6 displays and the company tries their luck on this segment. This is not the first time I check the device and I did the test for the previous model back in the 2016. The new series is not changed at all. The matte black cover is back again with similar thing and amazingly free from fingerprint magnet. They keep the same thing because there is no bad thing from it. The screen lid is giving away easily, but I feel that the build quality is durable and giving another worth impression. Keep in mind, we have to use both hands to open the lid and I do not know why the battery is hard to remove.

Move to the both sides of the body, few important ports are found. There are USB 3.0, type-C, Kensington lock, headphone jack, and display port. For connecting to the internet, we are given WIFI connectivity that connects fast and reliable. The speed is up to the 422 Mbit per second and more than enough for handling multiplayer games. For the performance, I measure it with PCMark 8 and got 4730 points on the test. The result is better than Nexoc G739 and maybe because of the SSD speed. The read and write speed are dependable for handling data at the same time. The hybrid storage allows you to save dozens of games without sacrificing the system performance thanks to the SSD support. MSI is a big name on this case and they once again proves their capability on making durable and affordable laptop.

ASUS Vivobook F510UA

I specifically save the cheapest one for the last. ASUS Vivobook F510UA costs you not more than 500 dollars and in return we are given a decent machine for both working and gaming. It features Intel I5 8250U which is the new gen from Canon Lake. The numbers of cores are boosted from 2 to 4 and offering 70 percent more power than Kaby Lake version. The processor integrate along NVIDIA 940MX for supporting the multi-tasking work and gaming. E-sport games play like a breeze and surprisingly beat the other competitors easily. The full HD display is allowing us to enjoy the multimedia purposes with bright and colorful 1080p display. The screen is almost bezel-less and everything you just see is totally screen without any annoying and thick bezel on it.

Security is always matter for people. For this case, the company giving you better solution on locking the device. Fingerprint scanner perfectly works in opening the lockscreen and say goodbye the old fashioned way like using password. The Windows 10 is pre-installed and coming with few bloatware. I basically delete almost all of it from Control Panel because it’s useless. This is the way the company makes the money and it’s pretty normal especially when considering the price. They are already crazy enough to make it so affordable. One last thing to talk about here is the storage. It uses 1TB HDD and not SSD. The 7200 RPM is slow, but not that bad as 1TB is big and fit dozens of things. The choice is back on you, so feel free to make any decision. Make sure to pick the one that suit to your needs.

You will find a laptop that will suit your needs and provide you with the savings you are hoping for.

What Makes a Gaming Laptop Different?

When you think of a gaming laptop, you think about a computer that is stunning and has all the bells and whistles. A gaming laptop can be compared to a standard laptop, but it has added components or higher specs than an everyday computer. Many times, a gaming notebook has a enhanced audio, RGB back-lit keyboard, and a better graphics card than the average laptop.

You really don’t need a back-lit keyboard for your computer to create stellar graphics. While it is a nice addition or not, you should not view video games in the dark because they can damage your eyes. So if you have the lights on, the keyboard is automatically illuminated.

If having a back-lit keyboard is important to you, you can always purchase one without this feature, do some research, and install it yourself. This is much cheaper than buying one from the factory.

What is a Graphics Card and How Does it Work?

A computer that costs under $1,000 will have a decent graphics card in it. The graphics card can run modern, new release games using the mid-range settings in the game’s settings. This may require you to adjust the settings inside each game, which is easy to do if you are familiar with the game itself, or if you check online for directions. These settings instruct the graphics card about how much detail is rendered in the game, which controls how much stress is placed on the computer.

The in-game settings allow you to adjust the amount of fine detail in every image that is rendered through your video game. The graphics card determines how much fine detail is in each image made that makes up the fluid movement in the game. Reducing the amount of detail in each rendering can allow your computer to create faster images, reducing the amount of lag experienced during game play.

The images on your computer screen are not true images like a photograph. These images comprised small dots on a computer screen, called pixels. The most common screen resolution, 1080p, uses over one-million pixels to make up the image you see on the computer screen. Each time an image is made, or a letter is made on a word document, the graphics card must reconfigure what you see on the screen. It must decide on where each piece of the image must go in the pixel order to create the image you see.

For the computer to be successful at rendering these images, it needs a translator to communicate the information provided by the game. Since the CPU only generates information as binary code, which the screen cannot use, something has to break it down into usable pieces. The job of translator falls to the graphics card, which can either be an integrated graphics card or a standalone graphics card. If a graphics card is integrated, it is a chip on the motherboard. If it is not integrated, it will be a separate chip which is the most desirable setup for modern gaming.

The job of the graphics card is difficult. It is one of the most complicated tasks a computer manages. When the CPU registers an image, it compiles data from all the applications involved in the game. Once the data is compiled, it turns image instructions into binary code. This completed code is sent to the motherboard and bounced to the graphics card. Here, the graphics card deciphers the code and must make instant decisions regarding where each piece of the image needs to be placed in the pixel array to create an image. Once these decisions have been made, the image is displayed on the screen.

In gaming, hundreds of images are generated every minute to keep the game play smooth. If the graphics card is not high quality enough, and the computer’s processor is not fast enough, the images flashed on the screen will not appear smoothly and the graphics card will fall behind in rendering them. This creates lag.

Some games require more image transitions to create the appearance of a character running or fighting in combat. Even for a top notch graphics card, this can be difficult to pull off. So if you are purchasing a laptop that costs less than $1,000, you may need to reduce the image resolution in your game settings to reduce the amount of fine graphics that are integrated into each rendered image.

You should also take time to learn how the CPU works so you can choose the right one for your gaming preferences.

How the Computer Processing Unit (CPU) Works

The majority of work completed inside of a computer is handled by the CPU. This is a component that is not easily seen inside of the computer, and in all reality it does not look large enough to handle this job on its own. However, without a high functioning CPU, you cannot run video games that require complex processing.

The CPU takes information from all the programs you are running and processes the data into a complex set of codes. These codes are referred to as binary codes. Binary codes are composed of a series of 1s and 0s. They are used by all the other components in the computer as instructions for using each piece of a program.

Every computer must have a CPU to operate, and a computer will not even turn on without a CPU.

Temporary Storage

Every computer needs a location to store temporary information used while running a computer program or game. There are two main types of storage used as a temporary holding unit for the information being processed. The first storage used by a computer is the hard drive. This is where information is held for short term storage, and it is used in holding full programs on a long term basis.

The second type of storage is RAM, which acts as temporary storage that is dumped when the information is no longer needed.

The hard drive holds information that will be needed on a long term basis. This includes computer programs, games and data based documents.

Five Things To Consider Before Settling on a Gaming Laptop

Budget When it comes to purchasing a computer one of the most important factors is to determine how much money you can afford to spend your new gaming laptop. There is a very good chance that you do not have an unlimited budget, especially since you are looking for gaming laptops that are under $1,000. So, what is the minimum amount that you are willing to spend on a computer, and what is the maximum amount that you are willing to pay for your new gaming laptop? Start searching within your minimum budget, which will allow you to save the most money possible, then work your way up to your maximum budget.

Since all of the laptops under $1,000 will most likely require some modification, looking toward the lower end of your budget may be beneficial, this will allow you to determine what modifications you can afford to make to each computer based on your budget. While we do not recommend purchasing a laptop that is under $500, this list of gaming laptops that are under $1,000 will provide you with a lot more benefits to begin with and the modifications will make more sense because the laptop will remain relevant for a longer period of time.

What Games Do You Play? If you are interested in playing first-person shooters, your graphics hardware should be your main focus. Second, you should focus in on purchasing a computer with an advanced CPU. Real time strategy games you will need to focus on the power behind the CPU and the GPU of your new computer. Since the newer released video games cross into multiple genres into their coding, you will need to look for a high quality GPU and CPU to accommodate the various needs each segment requires in order to function properly.

It is important that you purchase a gaming laptop that provides high quality in of the components that you desire. You can also upgrade your computer to much higher statement.

Consider Solid State If your computer will be used mostly for video games, and this will be the primary reason you have the computer, a solid state drive will be a great addition to your computer. You can save a lot of money and add a lot of memory to your notebook with this simple addition to your gaming laptop.

Optical Drives If your gaming system will be dedicated specifically to gaming, you can easily add a low-cost recordable DVD drive to your options list. This is all you will need in a gaming system. You will most likely never use a Blu Ray drive, which increases the price of the computer. Even the DVD optical drive you have will not be used very much through its lifetime. This will become more of a fact as the prevalence of digital downloads takes over through downloads like Steam and EA Games.

  3. Hello Andrea,

Your right. Technology has made it so it’s easier to find great gaming laptops for under $1000. You’ve created an excellent list of things a user should look for as they shop for the perfect gaming rig in this price category.

Like you say, sacrifices need to be made when you’re working with any budget. But when it comes to graphics cards on a gaming laptop, this is where you want to spend most your money.

No less than a discrete/dedicated graphics card will do for gaming. If you are someone who has unfortunately cheaped out in this department. And now find yourself in the unenviable position of experiencing stuttering as you play. Your best bet is to upgrade the GPU.

If you are going to sacrifice anywhere, the RAM is the best place to do it. But like Andrea said, no less than 4GB for gaming.

Great post. We hope to read more from you in the near future.
