Lenovo Legion Y920 Review – An Attractive Gaming Laptop with G-Sync Panel

Lenovo Legion Y920 is a very promising gaming laptop and once again making me believe in big name of Lenovo. For under 2100 dollars, the system offers of serious performance which is equipped with Intel Core I7 7820HK and NVIDIA GTX 1070 that capable enough to deliver of true experience on enjoying every game. In term of design, you see something different here because they finally put a really sturdy and good looking chassis. The company sure wants to take as much as consumers they can by providing everything. I just hope the temperature or heating issues are not going to be a big problem here.

This is going to be a good choice to afford in 2018 especially when you expect lot of performance in affordable price. Many of competitors offer similar choices, but most of them are in higher price range and becoming not really worth to take. I guess its worth for us to take look inside and see how it works on satisfying our needs. That is what we are going to talk about here. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.

Design and Build

The design does look as sexy as its predecessor. The lid is created from aluminum material that brushed in black finishing. Some plastic accents found and make it feel so premium and catchy to carry around. Move into the inside, you soon find the 17.3 inch display and a full size keyboard that having similar premium like its exterior. I notice the touchpad is fully backlit and adds of bit visual contrast when using it in darker condition. The screen itself is holding by a single drop hinge system and thankfully feels sturdy and responsive. I never find any crackling sounds when opening and closing the lid for multiple times. The design and build quality are top notch here.

One thing that I do not really like here is the weight. Yeah, measuring at 16.8 x 12.1 x 1.4 inches, the laptop is weight for 10 pounds and considered as pretty heavy in comparable with its competitors like ROG G752VS that weight for 9 pounds. The portability is not the selling point, so be sure using it only for indoor and not for outdoor usage. Thankfully, the port connectivity is well complete here as result of its big chassis. There are display port, HDMI, USB 3.0 ports, micro SD slot, and Thunderbolt 3 for connecting VR headset. Everything is well complete.

Keyboard and Display

Lenovo Legion Y920 2 Lenovo is always well known for their keyboard quality on Thinkpad series and surprisingly the company does similar thing here. The mechanical keyboard here provides of decent travel key at 1.7 millimeters and feels decent on typing for both short and long duration. The palm area itself is made slightly raised here and gives a good place to put your palm. I manage to type for 95 words per minute with only 1.5 percent error rate. I think the result is surprisingly great here. The same thing goes to the keyboard backlighting that fully customizable to our needs. It supports 16.8 million colors and coming alongside individual keys customization.

As for the display, I am seeing of a high quality panel here. The 17.3 screen in 1920 x 1080p resolution is vivid and colorful in any content I stream here. It produces 119 percent SRGB color and 362 nits for brightness. It looks bright and vivid at the same time; there is nothing more wonderful than having those cases. The NVIDIA G-Sync technology is back again this time and should deliver you a smoother and more detail images in your gaming.

Gaming and Power Consumption

The hardware configuration is pretty much high end as we seeing of an overclocked version of Core I7 7820HK and NVIDIA GTX 1070 graphic card. The processor itself features a maximum clock at 3.9 GHz and it’s fully unlocked to set to any clock rate you want. Just set the clock to higher rate for more performance or setting it at lower clock for more battery, it’s your choice. As for the graphic card, I think GTX 1070 is powerful although slightly slower than GTX 1080. Although its slower, the performance is not worrying because I am able to run every game in high setting here. The examples here are PUBG, Assassin Creed Origin, Battlefield 1, Overwatch, and included the latest one, Final Fantasy 15. Every single of them is playable up to 40 FPS for oven world games and up to 60 FPS for FPS and E-Sport games.

One biggest complaint to have here is the battery life. The battery should only reach of 3 hours and 25 minutes of full usage until it’s fully empty. Make sure to sit around the power outlet if you demand for gaming more than that duration. The battery is just fall off here as Gigabyte 15X and few other gaming systems having more than 4 hours of battery. This is the biggest consideration you have here for taking it home.

The Lenovo Y920 is a huge bargain when considering its performance and price range. With around 2000 dollars, you are able to get a gaming device with GTX 1070 and overclocked capable processor. There is no way to find similar choices at the same price range here. Everything is fine as long as you do not mind with short battery life.
