ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 is the new gaming laptop from the company that followed to use of Intel 8th generation of processor. The system itself is lacking of improvement in term of design because they just put of the last generation chassis, but it should promises you a big improvement in performance to thanks to the using of Intel 6 Core I7-8750H. The new processor is not giving a huge performance boosted on gaming, but some games getting impressive performance improvement like GTA 5 that now runs better at ultra-setting. Well, ASUS looks like wants to take their top position by keep releasing a high quality laptop.
I have checked its younger brother, the ROG GM501GS on my last review and I am getting a good experience on it. I just hope the similar thing is happened as there is not much different to find between these devices than the hardware configuration itself I think it’s best for us to take look inside and see how it performs on some tasks. That is what we are going to talk about here. To make it easier for you to take the conclusion, let’s we jump into the article.
Design and Connectivity
I am still surprised on how ASUS manages to fit of GTX 1080 into such a small and thin chassis that only has 1.79 cm thickness. 1.79 cm or 0.7 inch thickness is impressively thin and even thinner than a common gaming system like Dell XPS 15 that some users already think as that thin. In order to make sure the system is running to hot during gaming, the company take steps further on design and coming with an idea to put of drop down bottom panel that automatically make a 6 mm opening gap area. Well, 6 mm is relatively small, but it’s plentiful on giving proper air circulation here. It feels great to see a company wants to bring more innovative design to the genre.
Looking it in every direction, I have to say the laptop looks very beautiful and considered as such a masterpiece craft. The portability is also the nicest aspect here since the machine itself is only weight for 4.9 pounds and dimension at 14.9 x 10.3 x 0.7 inches. If you expect a gaming device to carry around, then this is going to be a perfect choice for you. At last, for the connectivity we still receive of combinations of plenty USB 3.0 ports and Thunderbolt 3 port for connecting the VR headset. Overall, everything is fine and better than I expect.back to menu ↑
Display and Inputs
Moving into the multimedia sector, we have of a 15.6 inch display with 1920 x 1080p resolution. Full HD display is not so impressive in 2018, but keep in mind the panel is fully supported by 144 Hz refresh rate and AHVA G-Sync technology for smoother images on gaming. Trust me; having up to 120 Hz refresh rate gives a big difference on gaming especially on FPS games. Everything just looks and feels faster than common screen. It’s a truly perfect experience to enjoy everything you want here moreover with bezel-less design where what we see only content here. Say goodbye to annoying thick black bezel.
As for the inputs, the keyboard is always impressive as its previous model. The travel key is not too short or wide and provides of enjoyable way on typing. I am not seeing any big difference here although I feel the keys are more solid and tactile than before. Basically, we receive of similar design keyboard here with few minor improvements. The six lighting backlit keyboard is back again here and allowing you to do multiple customization through the application. The AURA RGB lighting is one of the best to find right now and I am sure you will have plenty of good time on maximizing and tweaking this feature.

Performance and Battery Consumption
For the price that nearly cost you around 3000 dollars, ASUS promises of high end hardware configuration here. There are Intel Core I7 8750H and NVIDIA GTX 1080 that would let you to run any games at ultra or very high setting included the newer games like Assassin Creed Origin and Final Fantasy 15. The processor itself is coming from Coffee Lake Intel architecture and just coming early in 2018. Due the increased of additional cores here, the performance is significantly improved up to 50 percent in comparable to Intel I7-7820HQ. The performance increasing is satisfying here although the single core performance is similar for some reasons. This is not a big problem here moreover, you are capable to run every single game.
I have to say I am not a fan of battery life on ROG GX501 because it only lasts not more than 3 hours no matter what I do. Here, the battery life is slightly better, but better than my expectation. I mostly get around 3 to 4 hours of usage on gaming with 60 percent brightness and balanced mode. The battery life result is depending on setting you put on games. The highest setting you set, the more battery is draining. I just hope the battery life is at least should reach 5 hours usage, but unfortunately the thing is almost impossible here.back to menu ↑
The ROG GX501 is a solid upgrade over its last generation thanks to the Intel Coffee Lake generation processor. Sadly, that improvement is just not enough to make it different here as the design is so similar. Nearly 3000 dollars is not cheap and I think people rather than buying a 1000 dollars laptop and then getting external GPU that costs them less money. Once again, you could not expect of portability like this one. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration you want. I just hope the information is sufficient enough to take choice.
