Dell Precision M5520 Review – Ultra-Thin Workstation for Heavy Demand

You probably know Dell XPS 15 is considered as one of the user’s most favorite devices available thanks to the high performance, discrete graphic card, infinity display, and light premium chassis. The question right now, what about if users demand for something similar system, but coming with lot of better performance to handle 3D model and CAD. Well, this is where the Dell Precision M5520 is shining among the crowd market right now. The system features the same exact portable design like XPS 15, but has lot of power to depend on. The Intel I7 7820HQ and Quadro M1200 are featured here and likely should take care every single your needs.

This is what professional animator, photo editor, and heavy demand users need right now. One thing that you really need to consider here is the price which is higher than most standard laptops right now. It costs you nearly around 3500 dollars and some of you would think to buy a 1000 dollars device and then buying an external GPU. Well, it’s better for us to take look inside and see how worth the price costs here. To make it easier for you to take a conclusion, let’s we jump into the article.

Design and Construction

I am so impressed on how Dell manages to fit the new hardware into such a small and thin chassis. The design itself is exactly similar on what we see on XPS 15. The entire chassis is designed from either of aluminum for its lid area and carbon fiber material for the deck. The surface area then is covered with some kind of soft touch pattern that provides a solid grip to our hands when holding it. Moving to the inside, we are getting of 15 inch display that surrounded by thin bezel that called as “Infinity Edge” here. In term of portability, the system itself is only weight for 4.4 pounds and 0.7 inch thickness. This is far one of the lightest workstation I ever tested.

Furthermore, let’s check how the connectivity goes here. The well complete ports selections are introduced here with support from standard and modern ports. There are total of three USB ports that included of two USB type-A port and single USB type-C Thunderbolt 3 port. For adding more security approach, the fingerprint reader is featured here and allowing you to easily access the operating system by just placing our fingers. Overall, both of design and construction are overwhelmingly well in my opinion.

Display and Keyboard

Dell Precision M5520 2 For this review, I am getting the panel with 1080p resolution. There is another version coming with 4K resolution, but it costs you more and worst battery life as return. I decide to get the lower version as the price is already so pricy in my opinion. In quality, I think this display is not bad although the 1080p panel is so common here. The color accuracy is fairly accurate with unnoticeable bad details on my content. On the other side, the thing is even more impressive as the brightness is rock solid at 335 nits which is totally bright. The brightness is combined nicely with 113 percent of SRGB color and capable to deliver of high quality contents.

As for the keyboard, the keyboard is actually feels so decent. The 1.4 mm travel key and 58 grams punctuation force are not enough to make it very well. I manage to type for 85 to 89 words per minute on my test and feel not so bad. Unfortunately, the Thinkpad P51 offers more joyful and delightful experience on typing for this case. For daily usage, you are not seeing big difference, but keep in mind just keep your expectation low here.

Hardware Performance

The high end hardware level is promised here by combining of Intel new generation of processor and NVIDIA latest Quadro GPU. As the result, the performance is actually so impressively smooth even on handling 3D stuff on AutoCAD. The Intel I7 7820HQ itself has 2.9 GHz default clock and 3.9 GHz maximum clock that limits in 45 TDP watts. For the GPU, we have of NVIDIA Quadro M1200 that basically 20 to 30 percent more powerful than M1000 that you see on last generation mobile workstation. The performance is limitless here although on gaming the hardware is fall behind than GTX series due the different on architecture and driver support. It should run any game, but not in same exact level you expect for.

For helping you on taking care and moving all of stuff, you get of 1TB SSD storage that I think more than enough to save dozen of movies and data. The storage is relatively fast here on opening application and booting time process. The thing is normal as we have here is SSD and not HDD. The last thing worth mentioning here is battery life. For most all of time, it runs for 11 to 12 hours in single charge. I never really get lower battery result except on doing video rendering. I never expect the battery could be as this good. This should be a good consideration for replacing your old laptop.

Final Thought

The Dell 5520 just never stop impresses me with its quality. The design, performance, display, battery life, and build quality are top notch with only exception on keyboard that slightly behind here.
