After taking look into Acer Spin 3 for couple of weeks, I have to say that I am impressed on what Acer is doing here especially considering its price range. The system sports for quad core CPU, SSD storage, and upgradable dual channel RAM in such an affordable price. We could also talk about portability here because it’s a convertible machine and means you can just turn it into multiple modes depending on your needs. The traditional, laptop, and tent mode are available as soon as you need it. For a low budget users looking for a great system, I think you should take look inside because the laptop is really worth here.
Still, the device fan itself is incredibly loud for some reasons. I just hope it’s a software issue and not because of the thermal issue here. The temperature seems fine, but the fan works really hard to get the job done. As long as you do the light activities, you should be fine from this issue. I think its worth for us to take look inside and see how it works on us. That is what we are going to talk about here. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Design and Connectivity
The design is not coming with metal build here, but Acer rather puts of mostly plastic case with some kinds of finishing. The lid and upper side area are covered with gray finishing while the underside area is totally black. The texture pattern is adorable here and does not make it cheap at all. Unfortunately, the build quality is bit lack here as the rigidity could be better. The flex is quite noticeable in keyboard area and they do not include of removable battery and maintaining hatch for upgrading the hardware. To get inside we have to open the entire back cover here. Overall, I guess the design is okay, but the build itself is need improvement.
Moving into the inside, you soon find a 14 inch screen that surrounded in quite thick bezel. The bezel is thin enough although still not comparable with Dell XPS or Surface Pro. As for the connectivity, we have three USB type-A ports which two of them are USB 3.0 and single of them is USB 2.0.Its sadly to find the USB type-C is completely missing and USB 2.0 is relatively an old technology. Thankfully, we still get of HDMI, micro SD card that capable of transferring data with 25 MB per second.back to menu ↑
Non Backlit Keyboard and Reasonable Display
Acer equips the laptop with Chiclet style keyboard without any backlit support and means typing in darker environment is quite hard here. In term of typing, the experience is great although the flex in centre area is noticeable. Thankfully, it never annoy me on getting my fully experience here. The rough and short travel keys are very helpful here and I manage to type for around 83 words per minute with no issue. The quality is great and should satisfy anyone who needs of machine for supporting their productivity. The thing would be perfect with backlit support here.
As for the display, the 14 inch 1920 x 1080p panel is featured here. The color accuracy is nearly my expectation here around 58 percent, but sadly the brightness is totally low. 220 nits for me is not a good standard as users should trouble of using it outdoor unless they put the brightness setting into maximum level. For doing work the screen is not bad, but for streaming movies the quality is bit fall off here in every aspect especially for the brightness. The same problem happened last year and I really hope Acer can fix of this problem. Sadly, the price is talking here and means we could just receive what it has.

Performance and Battery
In term of performance, I will never give any complaint here especially when seeing combination of Intel I5-8250U which quad core processor, 8GB RAM, and 256GB SSD. The CPU itself features of 1.6 GHz with boosted support where it could reach higher clock in short time we need it. The 8GB RAM is coming with dual channel and means upgrading it should be very easy here. The 256GB SSD here is not the fastest one, but still faster than HDD and even EMMC. By having this hardware configuration, the performance is running smoothly in doing almost everything. Light or medium tasks would be taking care pretty easily here.
Acer promises of 12 hours battery usage at their marketing, but during my test the battery only lasts for around 8 hours and 10 minutes. I do not why or the way we test the battery is different here. For most all of time, that is the most common result you have here. It can be better or worst depending on your activities. 8 hours is more than enough for finishing everything in single day without need you to bring the charger here. The USB type-C charging will be perfect as companion here.
The Spin 3 is having everything necessary to be called as powerful machine. The processor, memory, and storage are sufficient enough for doing multiple tasks at the same time. Unfortunately, low brightness screen might turn your mind here because it’s quite unusable for outdoor usage. For this case, the ASUS TP401 is better in screen, but lack in performance. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration here. I just hope the information is useful enough for you. At last, thank you very much for reading the article and see you again next time.
