Bulky and heavy gaming system is now our fast as many manufactures try to combine between powerful performance and mobility. Razer is one of the first few companies capable of delivering ultraportable machine with top notch performance with their Blade 14 back in the days. Sadly, the product is not received by wide consumers because mainly they put of high power processor that brings lot of problem in temperature and battery. Now, in the 2018 they are back with upgraded 15 inch version which now looks much better. The system features of 8th generation Intel CPU and GTX 1070 Max-Q. With the new hardware, many things included thermal, battery, and performance should be better here.
The improvement is not only seen in hardware, but also seeing on design. The chassis is now thinner and lighter than before while still carrying of fully completely connectivity. The bezel surrounded the display is incredibly thin and looks gorgeous. By seeing all of this good stuff, I think its worth for us to take look inside and see how it works on getting us interested here. That is what we are going to talk about here. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Design and Connectivity
The Blade 15 is now successfully considered as the thinnest gaming device available right now thanks to the 17.1 mm thickness. The design itself is very familiar with black matte finishing, but the chassis feels impressively solid and light. With the aluminium material and good finishing, the chassis is very rigid and the flex is very minimal here. When giving the pressure into the base area, I am not even finding it bend at all. Furthermore, the same goes to the lid area although the hinge system is impossible to open it with single hands. I think the design and durability are worth for its price range that costs you nearly 4000 dollars here.
Measuring the weight, then you should be surprised on finding that its weight for only 4.63 pounds with dimension at 9.2 x 14 x 0.7 inches. It fits my small bag pretty easily without any problem. It feels great of carrying a workhorse considering how amount of power it has on inside. As for the connectivity, everything is included even for USB 3.0 ports. There are two USB standard ports, single Thunderbolt 3 port which necessary for connecting their Razer Core, another type-C port, HDMI, mini display port, and mdp connector. The SD card reader is missing and could be a problem for some users.back to menu ↑
Input and Display
The keyboard size here is very familiar to their Blade 14 series because both of these machines really have similar dimension. The only thing I notice different here is the rigidity where the flex is no longer found. In term of experience, the keys are pretty close together and means getting used is exactly what you need here. The placement for right shift key is weird and sometimes I accidentally press the wrong button for this case. Thankfully, the left shift key is normal and could be good solution for this problem. The Chroma backlight support is back and introduces 16.8 million colors configuration for each key.
As for the display, this is far the best 1080p panel I have seen until now. The 15.6 inch panel supports 144 Hz refresh rate while the 4K version is 60 Hz. It looks like Razer wants to target of gamers for the 1080p version while keeping the professional users at 4K model. There is even the 60 Hz 1080p version if you think the price is too high here. Based on my Colorimeter test, the screen covers of 100 percent SRGB color and very high level brightness.
|Razer Blade 15 Inch 2018||Main Specs|
|CPU||Intel Core I7-8750H 2.2 GHz|
|Graphics||NVIDIA GTX 1070 Max-Q|
|OS||Windows 10 Home|
|Memory||16GB DDR4 Memory|
Performance and Battery
The hardware configuration is pretty high end with Intel 8750H processor and NVIDIA GTX 1070. The hexa core CPU easily beats the I7 7700HQ with 40 percent more performance here. This is the only processor you could choose here, but for GPU you have a chance to pick of either GTX 1070 or 1060 Max-Q. Both versions are top notch, but I recommend you to take the 1070 because keep in mind the mobile version of these GPU are 15 percent slower than the desktop version. I have tested the performance on gaming and every single of them is running at ultra-setting at 1080p setting. Overwatch looks very smooth especially at 144 Hz screen.
The last worth mentioning feature is battery. While the temperature is not an issue here, the battery life is very standard. 4 to 5 hours is normal usage and might giving higher result during some cases. The G-Sync technology not introduced here and means doing light activities like browsing or editing document, theoretically should give better battery result. Having a bigger battery capacity is impossible by seeing how thin the chassis is. You are not going to find Razer giving bigger battery except they make the chassis is slightly thicker which impossible here.
The Blade 15 2018 is a perfect system for multifunctional working thanks to high level performance, portability, and crisp display. I really have no bad thing to talk about it for except the keyboard layout which unfamiliar here. But, it does not stop me to recommend you this laptop as your old device replacement in case you have high budget and expect something portable and powerful. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration here. I just hope the information is helping you on deciding a choice and feel free check or sharing our article.
