ASUS Zenbook UX391UA Review – A Truly Premium Ultraportable Laptop

ASUS Zenbook UX391UA is a really stand out 13 inch system in 2018. The laptop is considered as one of the best in 13 inch market. It features of very powerful performance, ergonomic and light design, and long last battery life. This is a perfect comparable system with other popular laptops like Huawei Matebook Pro X and Dell XPS 13. All of them are coming with similar prices and specifications although you could still few notable different here. Everything looks promising as long as you manage to live with only USB type-C port here. Standard port is no longer featured and swapped with Thunderbolt 3 port.

Thinner and lighter devices become a sensational issue for now as many manufactures try to make their product lighter and thinner than before. This is actually not a bad thing, but it might bring some issue like limited connectivity and bad thermal management. This Zenbook has suffered one of its issue which the connectivity management and lets how the temperature works here. That is what we are going to talk about at this article. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.

Design Impression and Maintenance

A big selling point to expect here is located on the design. The entire chassis is covered with dark and blue scheme alongside with few additional decorations like bevelled edges and its white company logo that making it so stand out. The system itself is built thoroughly of craftsmanship as I do not see of cracking or flex even when pushing it with some amount of power. When it comes to weight, the Zenbook is now lighter than before. The weight is now really close to Dell XPS 13 at 2.31 pounds. My small complaint is pointed to its front lip which having of some kind of crease. AS the result, holding it with both hands is much comfortable than taking it with our single hand. Not a big issue so far, but worth mentioning here.

A truly problem found here is probably on its IO connectivity. There is just no room for fit the standard ports and they just swapped it with 3 Thunderbolt 3 ports. Buying an extra adapter is necessary as there is no way for you for plugging your smartphone or thump drive. Not everyone has this issue especially when their moving from Macbook, but really being an issue for most users like me. The Matebook Pro X is relative slim here and it fits of better connectivity if you want another recommendation here.

As for maintenance support, ASUS does not leave us a variety choice here and the only upgradable part here located here is the storage. There is only a single M.2 SSD and I really recommend you to swap it with NVMe one if you look for a better speed here. The memory itself is soldered to the motherboard and we cannot do anything about it. They provide plenty configuration option, so make sure to pick the appropriate configuration.

Display and Audio

ASUS Zenbook UX391UA ASUS uses of 13 inch UHD display here which looks superb in both of brightness and accuracy. It’s a panel produced by AU and manage to cover of 95 percent SRGB color and giving maximum of 285 nits of brightness. Streaming movies feels enjoyable as color accuracy and detail surrounded you. The IPS panel is a perfect choice for video and photo editing as users can just show their photo result to client or friend. The bezel surrounded the screen is really slim and ASUS claims it has 85 percent screen to ratio which is totally true here. For this case, I won’t give my complaint as they put of what worth for our money.

As for audio quality, the both speakers never sound really bad, but unfortunately the sound goes quite distorted as soon as put out the maximum volume. The speakers capable of reach 85 db although like I said before, it sounds bad at maximum volume. Just make sure to put the volume at 80 percent level for keeping its issue. ASUS also adds of nice equalizer through their proprietary application for users to play around with.

Performance and Battery

The UX391UA packs of latest generation of Intel ULV processor. Its core I7 8550U and coming with 1.8 GHz base clock, this is a brand new processor with Quad core CPU and becoming a favorite for many manufactures right now. Unfortunately, ASUS does not add of discrete graphic card and what you have here is Intel HD as the main graphic processing unit. This CPU then comes with 16GB DDR3 RAM and 512GB PCIe SSD. Keep in mind, the memory is soldered to mainboard and means not upgradable. Thankfully, the SSD is fully upgradable although 512GB SSD is big enough for saving dozen of things. Just think of RAM here, they also have of 8GB variant and 256GB SSD which cheaper here.

In term of battery, the small chassis fits of 50 Wh battery. The battery life is okay and will last for entire day with no issue. The maximum usage I get here is 7 hours and 45 minutes under the 40 percent screen brightness and doing of browsing and editing document. The result is varied depending on your usage and setting. I think 7 hours is impressive considering we have of 4K panel with high level brightness.
