The Acer Spin is never meant of advertised as a gaming laptop, but it actually does of have pretty high specifications which let you playing any games you want. The I7 8550U is not a new thing and even its base model has it. But wait, you get to see its discrete graphic card because you would find here is GTX 1050. Yeah, this is kind of GPU which commonly used in many budget gaming machines like on ASUS FX504 and few similar systems. Seeing this kind of thing in 2 in 1 laptop makes me surprise since the portability and performance in our hands here.
The hardware specification here continues with 8GB RAM, and 1TB HDD. The memory is good at 8GB, but 1TB HDD is never being considered as good storage here. SSD is much more efficient since it does not come with moving part that means more saver way to bring it around. Acer provides of plenty upgrade inside as always. Today, we are going to take a look into it further and see how it runs some of newer titles released in 2018. Without further ado, let’s we jump into the article.
Case and Connectivity
The Spin 5 design has a very good value for under 1000 dollars, the chassis is built from aluminum and not plastic at all. The feel itself is amazing here and leaves of premium and good impression. The silver surface is yet comfortable and smooth to hold with our both hands. The manufacture does not add any much detail and when you close the lid, you will only find of its company logo placed at center of lid. The design itself is quite mainstream here, but simpler and plain approach is being more and more popular nowadays. It seems that users are more interested in this kind of design.
Measuring at 15 x 10.2 x 0.7 inches, the dimension is considered as small and compact for 15 inch device. But wait, the laptop is not meant to carry around for long time with single hand here because 2.2 kg is something heavy. In comparable with Lenovo Yoga 13 2018, the dimension and weight are larger here, but keep in mind its very normal considering we have of discrete GPU and HDD storage here. As for the connectivity, not much changed from the base model and we still have of standard USB ports and modern type-C connection.back to menu ↑
Security and Features
As a business device, Acer has not forgotten of adding security features like Fingerprint. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the left side of corner and very easy to reach especially if you are a left handed user. The Windows 10 fully supports of automatically login through this feature and users just have to place their finger and the lockscreen will be automatically unlocked. The Noble lock and TPM 2.0 are also featured here, but I do not find iris scanning feature which I never really use here. Not a big problem for most users, but worth mentioning here.
As for features, the Windows 10 Home edition is pre-installed and packed with lot of interesting features like Alexa. Yeah, the Cortana is replaced with Alexa, but yet I do not really know how both of them are comparable since I am not kind of person who gets into with it. It’s a nice feature where users could just set their schedule, setting alarm, and playing music. Most of these features available in both of Android and IOS, but you might want to try something different here. You also find some other kind notable features that should make your day much easier.

Performance, Gaming, and Battery
The performance from I7 8550U processor should not be questioned anymore since it features of a fast quad core low efficient CPU. What I really want to know is the gaming performance as it has discrete graphic card. Like I always, I have tried multiple games as the measurement here. For a good starter, I tried of Rocket League and CS Go and both of them are playable with highest setting up to 60 FPS. More demanding games like Fortnite and Overwatch tested and show a similar result here. 60 FPS is truly possible at high setting. One big consideration here that heavy or demanding games like Final Fantasy 15 won’t get you into high setting because of limitation from GPU and CPU.
The battery life is an important matter in convertible machine and at this case the battery usage is quite dependable at 6 hours. I tested the battery by running the web browsing application for nonstop and 5 to 6 hours is the maximum result here. Playing games in other side should provide different result depending on what kind of setting you put here. Thankfully, Acer offers us a good a charger which let you fully charge the battery in 2 hours.
The Spin 5 is the best solution you have right now if you look for a portable and powerful performance into a single package. For more gaming approach, they also have of Acer Nitro 5 Spin that features similar specification, but with better thermal management. Yeah, the thermal throttling in CPU is noticeable, but the thing is happened only during heavy load and pretty normal considering how the thin chassis manages the thermal here. The choice is yours, so feel free to take any consideration about it. Just make sure to check our latest article and mind leaving any comments for further assistance regarding the article.
